Two School Records Fall, Skyhawks Place Fifth At Holy Cross Crusades

4x400-meter relay and pole vault records broken at Hart Track

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 21, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team broke two school records and placed fifth overall at the Holy Cross Crusades, hosted by College of the Holy Cross, on Saturday evening at Hart Track.

Senior Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson), freshmen Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) and Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) and senior Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) shattered the school record in the 4x400-meter relay with a total time of 3:54.47 placing third overall among 14 teams.

Alves opened up the relay with a split of one minute, Curit posted a time of 57.1-seconds, Wilson ran a split 59.2-seconds and Carrier ran the anchor leg in 58.1-seconds to eclipse the previous school record of 3:58.11 set on April 23, 2010 at the Skyhawk Invitational. Carrier and Alves held the previous record along with teammates Danielle Wheeler and Kathryn O'Leary.

Sophomore Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) narrowly broke her own school record in the pole vault clearing 9-feet and 6.25-inches. Olin's previous school record was 9-feet and 6-inches set at the Bryant Invitational on April 2, 2011. Senior Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) also competed in the pole vault posting a height of 7-feet and 0.50-inches. Shelkova also placed seventh in the javelin (97-feet and 4-inches) and 14th overall in the long jump (15-feet and 6.25-inches).

Sophomore Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) finished second overall in the triple jump with a mark of 35-feet and 0.25-inches.

The Skyhawks placed three runners in the top-ten in the 1,500-meter run as sophomore Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) finished fifth (4:49.52), Wilson in sixth (4:49.98) and freshman Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) in eighth (4:52.82).

Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) turned in a time of 4:58.50 for 12th place overall, freshman Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) was 13th overall in 5:01.73 and sophomore Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) rounded out the group of distance runners in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:11.56 for 17th place overall.

Junior Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) finished second overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.29-seconds. Freshman Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) placed ninth overall in 16.03-seconds and junior Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass/Dennis-Yarmouth) was 11th overall in 16.14-seconds.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Hanlon posted a time of 1:06.50 for sixth place overall out of 16 competitors. Sophomore Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) was tenth overall in 1:08.15 while Burke finished 12th overall (1:09.80).

Stonehill also placed three runners in the top-20 in the 800-meter run as Alves placed ninth overall in 2:16.70, freshman Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) was 11th overall in 2:17.50 and senior Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) finished 20th with a time of 2:22.27.

Other Stonehill Highlights Included:

Sophomore Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) placed sixth overall out of 20 competitors in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.78-seconds. Curit finished eighth in 12.93-seconds and freshman Christina Russo (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) ranked 14th overall in 13.33-seconds.

Curit also finished sixth overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.02-seconds. Russo ran a time of 27.36-seconds for 18th place overall.

In the 400-meter run, Carrier posted a time of 59.40-seconds for eighth place overall while sophomore Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) posted a time of 1:03.18 (18th overall).

Junior Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) finished seventh overall in the 5,000-meter run in 18-minutes and 50.55-seconds.

The Skyhawks 4x100-meter relay team also finished fourth overall in 51.34-seconds.

Stonehill returns to action on Thursday, April 26 at the Penn Relays hosted by University of Pennsylvania (Franklin Field; Philadelphia, Pa.).
