Stonehill Places Second At Skyhawk Invitational

Curit breaks two school records, McBride shatters program mark in 10,000-meter run

EASTON, Mass. (April 14, 2012) – Stonehill College received 22 top-five performances, established three school records and set one facility record en route to a second-straight second place finish as the host of the Skyhawk Invitational at W.B. Mason Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Tufts University took home the team title in the fifth annual Skyhawk Invitational with 206.50 points. The host Skyhawks placed second (175 points), Boston University finished third (144.50), Bridgewater State University (BSU) ranked fourth (90) and Connecticut College was fifth overall (50.50).

Following the 10,000-meter run seniors Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson), Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central), Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral), Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) and Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) were all honored for their contributions towards the women's track & field program.

Freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) headlined Stonehill's efforts with two school record performances in the 400-meter run and the long jump. Curit, who took first place in both events, posted a time of 57.58-seconds in the 400-meter run eclipsing the previous program best of 58.54-seconds by Jackie Burbank which was set on May 4, 2002 at the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) Championships, hosted by Bryant University. In the long jump, Curit recorded a leap of 17-feet and 11.75-inches to narrowly surpass the previous program high-water mark of 17-feet and 11.5-inches set by Megan King also on May 4, 2002.

Junior Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) finished in second place overall in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 37:40.01, shattering the previous program best of 37:47.63 set by Kelly Chaisson on March 24, 2007 at Northeastern. BSU junior Molly Rouillard (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) placed first overall in 37:29.04 setting a new facility record at W.B. Mason Stadium. The previous record was held by Jess Jarrard of Stonehill (40:26.76 – 5/1/10). Mahoney finished third overall in the event in 38-minutes and 29.28-seconds.

Stonehill's 4x800-meter relay team comprised of Curit, Alves, freshman Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) and Carrier finished first overall in a facility record time of 9:32.53.

In the 800-meter run, Wilson ranked second overall in 2:16.24 and Carrier followed in third place with a time of 2:16.82. Freshman Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) was eighth overall (2:21.10).

Sophomore Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) finished first overall in the 5,000-meter run, more than ten seconds ahead of second place, in a time of 18:37.27. Freshman Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) ranked third overall in 19:02.69.

The Skyhawks placed three runners inside the top-five in the 1,500-meter run as Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) led the trio with a second place performance in 4:46.15. Alves was third overall with a time of 4:48.90 while Ferrarini finished fourth in 4:54.51.

Other Stonehill and Skyhawk Invitational Highlights Include:

Junior Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase recording a time of 11:38.70.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) fell just shy of breaking her own school record in the event (15.20) posting a second place finish in 15.23-seconds. Sophomore Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) ran to a fourth place showing in 15.63-seconds while junior Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass/Dennis-Yarmouth) was fifth overall in 15.86-seconds.

Polakowski turned in a second place performance in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.58 while freshman Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) came in third place in 1:07.68. Burke took fourth place overall with a time of 1:10.62.

Sophomore Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) placed well in two events turning in a fourth place effort in the long jump (16-feet and 9.75-inches) and fifth place ranking in the triple jump with a leap of 34-feet and 8.50-inches. Bernazzani finished sixth overall in the triple jump (33-09.25).

Boston University junior Allison Barwise (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional) bettered her facility record in the high jump taking first place overall with a height of 5-feet and 10.75-inches. Her previous mark was 5-feet and 7-inches set on April 23, 2010. She also won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.94-seconds.

Tufts University senior Heather Theiss (North Woodmere, NY/Hewlett) broke the facility record in the pole vault clearing 11-feet and 6.50-inches. The previous W.B. Mason Stadium record belonged to Lauren Bennet of Northeastern University, 11-feet and 5.75-inches, which was set at last year's Skyhawk Invitational.

Stonehill returns to action on Saturday, April 21 at the Holy Cross Crusades hosted by College of the Holy Cross (Hart Track; Worcester, Mass.).
