Curit Earns Three NE-10 Weekly Awards

EASTON, Mass. (April 10, 2012) – Stonehill College freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) has been named the Women's Track Athlete and Rookie of the Week and has also earned Field Rookie of the Week accolades from the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10), it was announced yesterday.

Curit posted the top NCAA Division II time in the 800 meter run at the George Davis Invitational with a time of 2:17.48 for fourth place overall. It was the first time Curit had run the 800 in her career, indoors or outdoors, at Stonehill. Curit also ranked fifth overall in the long jump with a leap of 17-feet and 11-inches, nearly eclipsing the ten-year-old school record of 17-feet and 11.5-inches. Megan King holds the record (17'-11.5") which was set at the NE-10 Championships at Bryant University on May 4, 2002.

Curit, who holds the indoor long jump record at 17-feet and 9.75-inches, collects her second Track Rookie of the Week award for the outdoor season and fourth weekly award total. Counting the indoor season, Curit has earned 11 weekly awards from the NE-10. Curit earned one Track Athlete of the Week award (2/13), three Track Rookie of the Week honors (12/6/11, 1/23 and 2/13) and three Field Rookie of the Week awards (1/23, 2/20, 2/28) during the indoor campaign.

This past indoor season, Curit garnered USTFCCCA All-East Region team accolades in three events including the 400 meter run, long jump and the distance medley relay. Curit provisionally qualified in the 400 meter run with a school record time of 57.46 seconds at the Boston University (BU) Valentine Invitational placing 17th overall (133 competitors). Curit also teamed up with seniors Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson), Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and freshman Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) in the distance medley relay at the same meet and helped the quartet post a provisional qualifying and school record time of 12:03.47 in the event.

Curit earned three All-Conference honors at the NE-10 Championships winning the long jump with a school record distance of 17-feet and 9.75-inches while placing second in the 400 meter run in 58.00 seconds. Curit also helped Stonehill's 4x400 meter relay team to a second place finish and school record time in the event with a time of 4:01.91 alongside teammates Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown), Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central).

Curit has helped re-write four school records in just one season at Stonehill (400, long jump, 4x400, distance medley relay), provisionally qualified in two events (400, distance medley relay), earned three NE-10 All-Conference honors, posted three top-five finishes (one first place) in the 400 meters, one top-five finish in the 200 meters and four top-five finishes (two first place) in the long jump.

Stonehill, ranked sixth overall in the USTFCCCA East Regional poll, returns to action on Saturday, April 14 as it hosts the Skyhawk Invitational at W.B. Mason Stadium with field events starting at 10:30 a.m.
