Curit leads the way with honors in three events, Ferrarini and Wilson earn honors in two events

EASTON, Mass. (March 6, 2012) – Seven members of the Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team have earned All-East Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their performances during the 2011-12 indoor season. The award recognizes each region's top-five performers in individual events and top three teams in relay events.
Headlining the Skyhawks list of All-East Region performers for the indoor season is freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) who collects accolades in the 400 meter run, long jump and the distance medley relay. Senior Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) has earned honors in the one mile run and distance medley relay while freshman Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) garnered honors in the 800 meter run and the distance medley relay. Senior Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson), senior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth), junior Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and sophomore Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) round out Stonehill's list of All-East Region performers.
Curit earns her first-career All-East Region honor in the 400 meter run, long jump and the distance medley relay. Curit provisionally qualified in the 400 meter run with a school record time of 57.46 seconds at the Boston University (BU) Valentine Invitational placing 17th overall out of 133 competitors. Curit also teamed up with Alves, Ferrarini and Wilson in the distance medley relay at the same meet and helped the quartet post a provisional qualifying and school record time of 12:03.47 in the event.
At the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) Championships, Curit earned three All-Conference honors winning the long jump with a school record distance of 17-feet and 9.75-inches while placing second in the 400 meter run in 58.00 seconds. Curit also helped Stonehill's 4x400 meter relay team to a second place finish and school record time in the event with a time of 4:01.91 alongside teammates Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown), Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central).
Overall on the season, Curit has helped re-write four school records (400, long jump, 4x400, distance medley relay), provisionally qualified in two events (400, distance medley relay), earned three NE-10 All-Conference honors, posted three top-five finishes (one first place) in the 400 meters, one top-five finish in the 200 meters and four top-five finishes (two first place) in the long jump. Curit also garnered seven weekly awards from the NE-10 conference earning one Track Athlete of the Week award (2/13), three Track Rookie of the Week honors (12/6/11, 1/23 and 2/13) and three Field Rookie of the Week awards (1/23, 2/20, 2/28).
Ferrarini collects her fourth-career All-East Region honor after earning selections in the distance medley relay during last year's indoor season and honors in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and 1,500 meter run during last year's outdoor season. The 2010-11 season marks the first year that the USTFCCCA has awarded All-East Region honors in track and field.
Ferrarini closed out her 2011-12 indoor season with a NCAA provisional qualifying and personal best time of 4:59.12 in the one mile run placing 13th overall out of 26 competitors at the New England Championships at the BU Track & Tennis Center on February 25. Ferrarini was also a member of Stonehill's school record and provisional qualifying distance medley relay team that finished eighth overall at the BU Valentine Invitational in 12:03.47. Ferrarini ran the 1,600 meter anchor leg in 5:06.
The senior was instrumental in the Skyhawks second place finish at the NE-10 Championships earning All-Conference honors in two events. In the one mile run, Ferrarini had a second place showing with a time of 5:04.60 and guided Stonehill to a first place performance in the distance medley relay as the lead leg of the event (12:32.73).
In five out of the six individual races she competed in this season, Ferrarini finished no worse than seventh place overall. Ferrarini placed third overall in the 1,000 meter run at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Tri-Meet with a time of 3:05.27, sixth overall in the one mile run at the New Balance Boston Collegiate Indoor Games (5:08.61) and seventh overall at the Charley Torpey Memorial Invitational in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:24.73 to go along with her performances at the NE-10 Championships and New England Championships.
Wilson, who earns her first-career All-East Region honor in the 800 meter run and distance medley relay, was the only member of the Stonehill women's indoor track and field team to earn All-New England honors this season with her sixth place performance in the 800 meter run (2:16.16). Wilson qualified for the finals of the event by trimming down her previous school record in the 800 meter trials with a time of 2:15.45. In the distance medley relay which provisionally qualified for the NCAA's and broke the school record, Wilson ran a 2:15 split in the 800 meter leg of the event.
Wilson also collected a pair of All-Conference honors at the NE-10 Championships with a second place showing in the 800 meter run (2:15.48) and a first place and conference meet record performance as a member of the 4x800 meter relay team. Wilson along with teammates Alves, Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) and Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) broke Southern Connecticut State University's record from a year ago (9:45.71) with a time of 9:29.08.
The freshman harrier competed in eight races individually over the course of the season and four relays. Wilson won her first-collegiate race at the Reggie Poyau Invitational in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 3:06.16. Wilson also collected four Track Rookie of the Week honors (12/10/11, 1/30, 2/20, 2/28) from the conference throughout the season.
Alves collects her second career All-East Region honor after earning recognition in the one mile run last indoor season. Alves ran the 1,200-meter lead leg of Stonehill's school record setting and NCAA provisionally qualifying distance medley relay team in 3:42.
Alves also successfully defended her title in the 1,000 meter run at the NE-10 Championships notching her second-consecutive win in the event and second All-Conference performance. Alves won the 1,000 meter run with a time of 3:00.96 less than a second ahead of Briana Devereaux from Merrimack College (3:01.94). Alves also ran the lead leg of the 4x800 meter relay which placed first overall and established a new conference championship record with a 2:22 split.
Mahoney picks up her fourth-career All-East Region honor and second-career honor in the 5,000 meters indoors. Mahoney, who earned All-East Region accolades for the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters outdoors last season, placed 14th overall in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:13.54 at the New England Championships. Mahoney holds the school record for the 5,000 meter run outdoors in 17:29.40 which was set on April 22, 2011 at the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton University.
Mahoney competed in eight races total (seven individual, one relay) on the season highlighted by a third place showing in the 3,000 meter run (10:34.19) at the NE-10 Championships and back-to-back third place efforts in the one mile run at the Reggie Poyau Invitational and the UNH Tri-Meet.
McBride also earns her fourth-career All-East Region honor in similar fashion to Mahoney. McBride, now a three-time honoree in the 5,000 meter run and also a selection in the 10,000 meter run, posted a time of 17:53.00 in the 5,000 meter run at the New England Championships for 11th place overall. At the NE-10 Championships, McBride finished second overall in the 3,000 meter run in 10:30.40.
Olin rounds out the list of Skyhawks named to the All-East Region team earning first-career honors in the pole vault. Olin broke her previous school record in the event on December 3, 2011 at the Jay Carisella Invitational with a height of nine-feet and 6.25-inches. Olin went on to tie her school record two more times throughout the season.
Stonehill, currently ranked third in the USTFCCCA Division II East Regional index, will open the outdoor season on Friday, March 30 at the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State University (Paul Derr Track & Field Stadium; Raleigh, N.C.) at 10 a.m.
