Skyhawks Compete At Tufts Stampede And Charley Torpey Memorial Invitational

Bishop wins 5,000 meter run at Tufts Stampede

EASTON, Mass. (February 4, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team competed in two meets on Saturday afternoon splitting up members of the squad between the Tufts University Stampede in Medford, Mass. and the Charley Torpey Memorial Invitational hosted by the University of Rhode Island (URI) in Kingston, R.I.

Sophomore Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) highlighted the Skyhawks efforts at the Tufts Stampede taking first place in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:42.31.

Freshman Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) finished fourth overall in the event in 19:00.76.

At URI's Mackal Fieldhouse, freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) placed well in two events finishing sixth in the long jump with a leap of 16-feet and 11.50-inches and seventh overall in the 500 meter run with a time of 1:18.75.

Senior Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) placed eighth overall in the 400 meter run in 59.67 seconds. Carrier also ran the anchor leg of Stonehill's sixth place 4x400 meter relay team along with sophomore Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex), freshman Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) and sophomore Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) in 4:03.61.

Classmate Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) earned an eighth place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:21.08.

Reigning Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) Track Rookie of the Week Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) finished seventh in the 1,000 meter run (3:02.66).

Senior Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) earned a seventh place finish with a time of 10:24.73 in the 3,000 meter run. Freshman Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) placed ninth overall (10:36.63).

The Skyhawks placed three runners inside the top-15 in the one mile run as senior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) placed tenth overall in 5:14.39, junior Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) finished 12th in 5:17.21 and freshman Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) was 13th overall in 5:17.96.

Sophomore Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) finished 11th overall in the triple jump (33-feet and 11.50-inches) and 14th overall in the long jump (15-feet and 11.50-inches).

Senior Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) turned in a 12th place showing in the long jump (16-feet and one-inch) and a 16th place performance in the triple jump (32-feet and 10.50-inches).

Stonehill returns to action on Friday, February 10 at the Boston University (BU) Valentine Invitational at the BU Track & Tennis Center in Boston, Mass. at 1 p.m.
