Skyhawks Finish Third Overall At UNH Meet

Curit paces Stonehill with first place finish in 400 meter run

DURHAM, N.H. (January 21, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team placed third overall at the University of New Hampshire tri-meet on Saturday at the Paul Sweet Oval in Durham.

The College of the Holy Cross took first place honors scoring 172.50 points while New Hampshire placed second with 169.50 points and Worcester State University claimed fourth place overall with 108 points.

Freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) highlighted the Skyhawks efforts on the evening with a first place finish in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:00.65. Curit also placed fourth overall in the long jump, 16-feet and 7.75-inches, and helped Stonehill to a second place finish in the 4x400 meter relay in 4:07.44 as the lead leg of the event along with teammates Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown), Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) who also placed second in the 500 meter run in 1:20.56.

Sophomore Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) earned first place in the pole vault tying her own school record of 9-feet and 6.25-inches.

Stonehill racked up plenty of points in the middle distance events placing ten runners inside the top-ten in three events with five individuals scoring points.

Freshman Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./West Suffield) finished second in the 800 meters while senior Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) took third in the 1,000 meters in 2:20.93 and senior Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) earned fourth place (3:08.27). Classmate Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) placed third overall in the one mile with a time of 5:17.78 and sophomore Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) came in seventh place in 5:25.05.

In the 55 meter hurdles, Polakowski and junior Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) finished third and fourth, respectively, as Polakowski posted a time of 8.64 seconds and Bernazzani crossed the finish line in 8.72 seconds.

Senior Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) finished second overall in the triple jump with a leap of 34-feet and 5-inches, fifth in the long jump with a mark of 16-feet and 4.25 inches and 12th overall in the shot put (30-feet and 3.50-inches).

Other Stonehill highlights include:

Sophomore Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) took third place in the triple jump with a mark of 34-feet and 2.25-inches to go along with a 12th place performance in the long jump (15-feet and 0.75-inches).

Stonehill's "B" team in the 4x800 meter relay consisting of freshmen Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) and Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy)  and Mahoney and Wilson placed third in 9:57.83. The Skyhawks "A" team of Alves, Bishop, Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) and Ferrarini finished fourth (10:04.20).

Sophomore Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) placed sixth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:26.34 while Venturo finished sixth in the 1,000 meter run.

Stonehill is back in action on Friday night for the New Balance Boston Collegiate Indoor Games, hosted by the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, starting at 4:30 p.m.
