Stonehill Takes Reggie Poyau Invitational

Skyhawks post 19 top-five finishes at the Gosman Athletic Center

WALTHAM, Mass. (December 10, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team scored 129 points to claim first place overall at the Reggie Poyau Invitational, hosted by Brandeis University, at the Gosman Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Skyhawks posted 19 top-five finishes to earn top honors over second-place UMass Lowell, 129-111. Brandeis University placed third overall (82 points), Keene State College finished fourth overall (71 points) and Bentley University placed fifth overall (48 points) to round out the top-five scoring teams at the invitational.

Freshman distance runner Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) edged out Brandeis' sophomore Victoria Sanford (Andover, N.Y./Andover) in the 1,000 meter run by 0.15 seconds (3:06.16 to 3:06.31) to highlight one of Stonehill's five first-place finishes on the afternoon while teammate Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) finished third overall in 3:07.59.

Wilson also ran the lead leg of the Skyhawks first place 4x800 meter relay team along with classmate Erin Reilly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington), LaRegina and senior Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) in9:56.72.

Earlier in the meet, Carrier claimed first place in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:40.81, almost five seconds faster than second place.

Sophomore Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) finished first overall in the pole vault clearing nine-feet and 0.25-inches.

Freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford), senior captain Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) and sophomore Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) went 1-2-3 in the long jump with Curit posting a mark of 16-feet and 8.75-inches to earn first place accolades. Shelkova had a mark of 16-feet and 4.25-inches for second place while Comei jumped 16-feet and one inch to claim third overall.

Shelkova also added a fourth place finish in the high jump clearing 4-feet and 8.25-inches.

Lauren Hanlon

Reilly and teammate Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) placed second and fourth in the 800 meter run, respectively, with times of 2:25.24 and 2:28.26.

Junior Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood), sophomore Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex Junction) and freshman Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) went 3-4-5 in the 55 meter hurdles. Bernazzani ran a time of 8.68 in the finals for third place, Polakowski finished in fourth with a time of 8.94 and Hanlon sprinted to a time of 9.06 for fifth place overall.

Polakowski and Hanlon teamed up with Comei and Curit in the 4x400 meter relay for a third place finish overall in 4:11.80. Curit and Polakowski also finished third and fifth overall in the 200 meter dash with times of 26.71 and 27.60, respectively.

In the triple jump, Comei finished fourth with a mark of 34-feet and 2.75-inches.

Freshman Meghan Hughes (Pittsfield, Maine/Maine Central Institute) placed eighth overall in the weight throw with a toss of 30-feet and 2.75-inches.

Sophomore Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) finished sixth overall in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.83 seconds. Egesi qualified for the finals with a time of 7.76 in the preliminary heat.

Senior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) placed third overall in the one mile run in 5:23.71.

Freshman Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) finished third overall in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:38.91.

Stonehill returns to action on Saturday, January 21 at the New Hampshire Tri-Meet, hosted by the University of New Hampshire, at the Paul Sweet Oval in Durham, N.H. at 11:00 a.m.
