Skyhawks Begin Season At Jay Carisella Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. (December 4, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team opened up its 2011-12 season at the Jay Carisella Invitational, hosted by Northeastern University, at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center this weekend. 

Senior middle distance runner Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) posted the team's top individual performance of the invitational taking first place in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:19.09. Carrier also ran the anchor leg of Stonehill's third place 4x400 meter relay team along with teammates Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex), Katherine Sexton (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) in 4:08.16. 

Curit also finished fourth overall in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.87, the fastest time among all collegiate entries in the race. 

Sophomore Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) placed eighth in the pole vault clearing nine-feet and 6.25-inches to break her own school record.

Sophomore Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) ranked third overall in the 800 meter run in 2:20.12, a personal best. 

The Skyhawks placed three freshmen in the top ten among 36 competitors in the one mile run. Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) ran to a fourth place finish overall in 5:15.31 and was followed by classmates Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) in 5:17.56 and Erin Reilly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) in 5:22.98. 

Junior Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) finished fifth overall in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.73-seconds. Bernazzani qualified for the finals with a time of 8.75-seconds in the prelims. 

Senior Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 16-feet and 2.50-inches. Shelkova also competed in the 800 meter run (21st overall/2:37.51) and the shot put (24th overall/28-feet, 5.75-inches). 

Other Stonehill highlights include: 

Senior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) finished eighth overall in the 5,000 meter run in 18:24.19. 

Sophomore Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) posted an eighth place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 33-feet and 2.50-inches. 

Freshman Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) finished tenth in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:47.28. 

Stonehill returns to action next Saturday when it participates in the Reggie Poyau Invitational at Brandeis University starting at 11 a.m.
