Stonehill Continues Outdoor Competition With Two Weekend Meets

Mahoney wins 10,000m run at Tufts Snowflake Classic

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (April 2, 2011) – The Stonehill College women’s track & field squad opened the second weekend of the outdoor season with a solid overall performance at the Bryant University Track & Field Invitational on Saturday.

Sophomore Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) led the Skyhawks on the track with a fifth-place finish in a field of Division I competitors in the 5000-meter run, crossing the line in 18:21.93. Stonehill placed four runners in the top 20 as senior Amanda Tripodi (Darien, Conn./Darien) and freshman Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) finished 10th and 11th, and sophomore Stephanie Wilson (Wayzata, Minn./Hopkins) came across in 19th.


Kristen Mahoney was the 10,000m winner at Tufts.

The 4x400m relay quartet of seniors Lindsey Booth (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and Danielle Wheeler (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel), junior Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central), and freshman Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) combined to place sixth in 4:17.74. Carrier also led Stonehill’s individual placements in the 400m event, finishing 10th with a time of 1:01.93.

Sophomore Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) was the Skyhawks' top finisher in the 100-meter hurdles, placing sixth in 15.81, while sophomore Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass/Dennis-Yarmouth) followed just outside the top ten with a 12th-place finish in 16.63. Sophomore Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading) also placed sixth in the high jump, clearing four feet, 9.75 inches.

A pair of Skyhawk long-distance specialists also headed to the Tufts University Snowflake Invitational to compete in the 10,000-meter run, not contested at Bryant. Junior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) came away with the victory in 38:24.80, knocking nearly a full minute off her personal-best time from last season. Sophomore Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) took second just behind her in 39:14.66, as both runners qualified for the New England Outdoor Championships in May.

Freshman Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) posted a trio of strong placements in the field at Bryant, taking seventh in the discus throw (112’10”), eighth in the javelin (124’7”), and 14th in the shot put (33’10.75”). Junior Erica Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) also placed 10th in the javelin (118’2”) and 20th in the shot put (32’1”).

Stonehill returns to action next Saturday at the George Davis Invitational hosted by UMass Lowell, with events beginning at 10:30 a.m.
