USTFCCCA recognizes season’s top performances

EASTON, Mass. (March 10, 2011) – Nine members of the Stonehill College women’s indoor track & field team have been recognized in the inaugural class of All-East Region honorees by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Earning All-Region distinction across three events this season are freshman Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson), sophomores Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence), Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading), and Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic), juniors Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson), Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral), Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth), and Susan O’Connell (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich), and senior Lindsey Booth (Franklin, Mass./Franklin).

This season is the first for which the USTFCCCA has named All-Region performers in Division II indoor track & field. The awards recognize the top five performers in individual events and the top three teams in relay events in each region.

Veit, Ferrarini, O’Connell and Booth earn All-Region recognition for their school-record performance in the distance medley relay at last month’s New England Indoor Championships. Their time of 12:17.17 placed seventh overall in the event, good for All-New England honors, and took nearly two seconds off the previous Stonehill program record. Veit recorded a 3:45 split in the 1200-meter leg, followed by O'Connell with a time of 58.6 seconds in the 400-meter second leg, Booth with a 2:24 split in the 800-meter third leg, and Ferrarini with a 5:10 mile in the anchor leg.

Veit was also an All-Region performer in the mile, ranking fifth in the region with her time of 5:11.40 at the New England meet. Alves stands third in the East Region at 5:09.73, set at the Boston University Valentine’s Invitational as the top Skyhawk finisher in the event.

Four Stonehill runners ranked in the regional top five in the 5000m run to claim All-Region selections. Mahoney owns the second spot with her time of 18:10.43 at BU, followed by Regan at 18:25.07 and McBride at 18:28.26, both set at the New England Championships, and Carmone in the fifth slot at 18:38.04, her winning time in the event at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

Stonehill, currently ranked fourth in the USTFCCCA Division II East Regional index, will open the outdoor season on March 26 at the Bridgewater State Invitational.
