BOSTON, Mass. (February 27, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional index, wrapped up competition Saturday at the New England Indoor Track & Field Championship, hosted at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.

The Skyhawks placed 33rd overall as a team, and saw four runners earn All-New England honors during the weekend with Friday’s record-setting distance medley relay performance.

Saturday’s events were highlighted by an 11th-place finish from the 4x800m relay squad. Juniors Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central), Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) and senior Lindsey Booth (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) teamed up for a time of 9:30.57, the Skyhawks’ best of the season in the event.

Carrier also recorded an individual 15th-place finish in the 500m dash, running a 1:18.08 to come in just ahead of junior Susan O’Connell (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) in 17th at 1:18.24, as both turned in their fastest times of the year.

Junior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) led six Skyhawks in the 5000m event, finishing 15th in 18:16.90. Freshman Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) also finished in the top 20 with a time of 18:25.07 for 19th overall, and sophomore Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) followed her All-Conference performance at last week’s Northeast-10 Championships with a season-best time of 18:28.26 in 21st place.

Sophomore Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood), who qualified for Saturday’s 60m hurdles final with a preliminary time of 9.35 seconds, posted a 9.37 in the final to place 13th overall.

O’Connell, Ferrarini, Booth, and sophomore Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) got the Skyhawks off to a strong start on Friday with their record-setting performance in the distance medley relay, turning in a program-record time of 12:17.17 to place seventh overall in the event and earn All-New England honors. Veit opened with a 3:45 split in the 1200-meter leg, followed by O’Connell with a time of 58.6 seconds in the 400-meter second leg, Booth with a 2:24 split in the 800-meter third leg, and Ferrarini with a personal-best 5:10 mile in the anchor leg. The Skyhawks took nearly two seconds off the previous Stonehill mark of 12:18.54, set at the 2009 Boston University Valentine Invitational by O’Connell, Carrier, Lindsey Pinkham, and Kristina Coriaty.

Stonehill will resume competition next month when they open the outdoor season at the Bridgewater State University Invitational on March 26.
