Stonehill Competes at Reebok Boston Indoor Games

Two Skyhawks qualify for upcoming New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. (January 29, 2011) – The Stonehill College women’s track and field team placed 17th overall at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Friday, hosted by Northeastern University at the Reggie Lewis Center. Highlighting the event for the Skyhawks were a pair of strong performances qualifying two runners for February’s New England Championship meet.

Junior Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) posted a time of 3:00.97 to place 11th in the 1000m run and qualify for the New England Championships in the event for the second straight year. Freshman Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) qualified for her first New England event with a time of 8.74 seconds in the 55m hurdles, placing 12th overall. Polakowski also posted an 18th-place finish in the 200m dash in 27.07 seconds.

Sophomore Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading) tied for 9th place in the high jump, clearing five feet, 1.75 inches.

Juniors Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) and Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) placed 13th and 14th in the 3000m run, Mahoney in 10:31.23 and Ferrarini right behind her in 10:33.09.

Other Stonehill highlights include:

Sophomore Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) was the Skyhawks’ top finisher in the mile, placing 20th in 5:13.63. Senior Amanda Tripodi (Darien, Conn./Darien) followed in 31st place at 5:21.47, and freshman Sarah Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) placed 39th with a time of 5:26.47.

Junior Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) placed 11th in the long jump at 16 feet, 5.25 inches, and 18th in the triple jump with a mark of 34 feet, 2.75 inches.

Freshman Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) took 11th in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, six inches.

Stonehill returns to action on Saturday, February 5 at the Tufts Stampede, hosted at Tufts University’s Gantcher Center beginning at 11:00 a.m.
