WORCESTER, Mass. (March 28, 2010) – The Stonehill College women’s track and field team opened its outdoor season with a third place finish at the Worcester City Championships, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute, on Saturday.

Stonehill compiled 140.50 points for its third-place finish out of 11 competing schools at the event. Host WPI won the team even with 216.50 points, while Worcester State College was second with 147 points.

Senior Kathryn O’Leary (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) led the list of seven individual event winners for Stonehill as she broke a school-record in the 400-meter hurdles with her winning run of 1:05.08 to qualify for the New England Championships. She edged the previous school mark of 1:05.15 set by Meghan Breault at the 2008 Northeast-10 Championships at Bryant University.


Kristen Mahoney

Sophomore Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) and freshman Jessica Jarrard (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hudson Catholic) took first and second, respectively in the 10,000-meter run. Mahoney finished in 39:14.09, qualifying for the New England Championships, while Jarrard posted a time of 40:47.49.

Sophomore Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) won the long jump with her leap of 16’3.75”. She was fourth in the triple jump with her distance of 33’4.75” and ninth in the 200-meter dash in 29.62-seconds.

Freshman Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence), an All-American in cross country for Stonehill, won a 1500-meter run packed with Skyhawks with her time of 4:49.14. Classmate Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) placed third in 4:59.19. Fellow freshmen Stephanie Wilson (Wayzata, Minn./Hopkins) and Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./Seekonk) finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh in 5:13.55 and 5:18.98, respectively. Freshman Jessica Kilpatrick (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) and senior Bridget DeVincent (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) were 11th and 12th in 5:27.97 and 5:33.58.

Sophomore Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) won the 400-meter run in 59.98-seconds, while junior Danielle Wheeler (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) was third in 1:02.50.


Danielle Scaglione

Freshman Danielle Scaglione (Somersworth, N.H./Somersworth) won the javelin in her collegiate debut with a throw of 117’05”. Classmate Kathryn Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.05-seconds.

Stonehill’s 4x400-meter relay team won a head-to-head event with WPI in 4:12.29, nearly seven full seconds ahead of the Engineers time of 4:19.14.

Other results for Stonehill included:

Junior Lindsey Booth (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and freshman Alexis Monahan (Swoyersville, Pa./Holy Redeemer) were separated by less than a half second in the 800-meter run, placing second and third in 2:27.03 and 2:27.30, respectively.

Freshman Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) placed second in the high jump with her height of 5’2.25”. She was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.09-seconds.

Sophomores Erica Insel (Clinton, N.J./Vorhees) and Kamilia Dragosz (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) placed ninth and tenth in the javelin with throws of 102’11” and 90’10”, respectively. Insel was also sixth in the shot put with a throw of 32’3.75”. 

Sophomore Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) placed eighth in the high jump with a jump of 4’5”.

Junior Angela Miller (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) placed tenth in the 200-meter dash in 29.71-seconds and 12th in the 100-meter dash in 14.21.

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday, April 3, when it competes at the Bryant Invitational in Smithfield, R.I.
