Stonehill Records Fall at Tufts Stampede
Bernazzani and Rocha set school-records, while Skyhawks provisionally qualify for nationals in winning 4000m DMR and set school record in winning 4x400-meter relay; Mahoney cruises to 5000m victory
MEDFORD, Mass. (February 7, 2010) - The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team turned in several strong individual performances and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in one event while picking up three event wins at the Tufts Stampede in the Gantcher Center on Saturday.
Stonehill's 4000-meter distance medley relay team provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., next month with its first-place finish in the event posting a time of 12:18.86. Running the event for the Skyhawks were junior Lindsay Pinkham (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area), sophomores Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) and Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) and freshman Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence). The team won the event by nearly 30-seconds over Wesleyan University (12:47.30).
Stonehill also dominated the 1000-meter run by placing three runners in the top five and four in the top ten among 19 competitors. Alves led the way in second place with a time of 3:05.14, followed closely by junior Lindsey Booth (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) in third in 3:05.82. Pinkham placed fifth in 3:07.96, with freshman Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) taking ninth in 3:10.50.

Carrier was also part of Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay team that took first with a school-record time of 4.07.65. Joining Carrier on the record-breaking team were senior Kathryn O'Leary (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia), junior Danielle Wheeler (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and sophomore Susan O'Connell (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich). The team shaded the previous school record of 4:07.7 set at the Reebok Boston Collegiate Indoor Games on January 30, 2009, by Carrier, Pinkham, O'Leary and O'Connell.
Individually, Carrier took fourth (out of 20 competitors) in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.38, while O'Leary placed seventh in 1:01.87. O'Connell was fourth (out of 19 runners) at 600-meters with a time of 1:40.85, while Carmone took sixth at 800-meters in 2:25.65. Wheeler finished seventh (out of 26 runners) in the 200-meter dash in 28.68.
Sophomore Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) earned a first-place finish in a field of eight runners in the 5000-meters with a time of 18:48.14 - more than 20-seconds faster than the second place finisher.
Freshman Kathryn Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) took second in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.75-seconds in the final. She advanced with a school-record time of 8.71-seconds in the preliminary round to qualify for the New England Championships later this month. She broke the previous record of 8.80-seconds set by Tracy Tobacco on February 22, 2003, at the Northeast-10 Championships.
Classmate Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) finished second in the 55m hurdles final in 9.05-seconds after qualifying fifth in 9.13-seconds to finish second to Bernazzani in their preliminary heat.

Senior captain Meghan Rocha (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) finished third in the weight-throw with a program-record distance of 40'9". She broke her own school-record of 39'3.72" set at the Wheaton Invitational two weeks ago.

Sophomore Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) got the weekend started for Stonehill on Friday night when she was one of ten competitors in the pentathlon, finishing fourth with 2,750 points. Her top event was the long jump where she placed second with a distance of 15'9.5". She was third in the 800-meter dash (2:29.37), fourth in the shot put (26'5.75"), sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (10.13-seconds) and ninth in the high jump (4'4.75").
Freshman Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) had a good all-around day for Stonehill, starting with a sixth-place finish in the 55-meter dash in 7.75-seconds. She followed that up with a tenth-place finish in the high jump with a height of 4'11", before finishing eighth in the long jump with a distance of 14'11".
Freshman Lynley Joynt (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) took third (out of 31 runners) in the mile in 5:16.05, with classmate Jessica Jarrard (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hudson Catholic) close behind in fourth with a time of 5:22.12. Senior Bridget DeVincent (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) finished 11th in 5:35.28.
Sophomore Erica Insel (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) finished fourth in the shot put with a distance of 35'5".
Freshman Stephanie Wilson (Wayzata, Minn./Hopkins) placed fifth (out of 20) in the 3000-meter run in 10:56.99, followed closely by classmate Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) in sixth with a time of 11:00.86.
Stonehill took fourth in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:08.76. Running for the Skyhawks were Booth, Veit, Jarrard and Joynt.
Stonehill is back in action on Friday when it competes in the Boston University Valentine's Classic at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
