Two More Earn All-New England Honors for Stonehill at New England Championships

Shelkova places second in heptathlon, while Dyson earns second
All-New England finish in two days

DEDHAM, Mass. (May 8, 2010) – The Stonehill College women’s outdoor track and field team saw two more athletes earn All-New England status on day two of the 2010 New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Northeastern University, at Solomon Stadium.

Sophomore Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) earned All-New England honors for the heptathlon with her second place finish with 3,828 points. Kathryn Early from the University of New Hampshire won the event with 4,256 points. Shelkova rounded out the event with a first-place finish in the long jump to go with second-place finishes in both the javelin throw and 800-meter run. She won the long jump portion with her leap of 16’04.25”, while adding a throw of 91’00” in the javelin. Shelkova closed out the competition with a time of 2:39.19 in the 800-meters. She also placed second on Friday in the shot put (31’05.75”) and 200-meter dash (27.96-seconds).

One day after taking home All-New England honors with her third-place finish in the javelin throw, freshman Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) earned All-New England status for the high jump with her seventh-place finish. She cleared 5’03” on her second attempt at that height.

Sophomore Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) shaved .03-seconds off her school-record and provisional NCAA Championship qualifying time for the 800-meter run of 2:14.35 to place 11th out of 27 runners in that event.

Freshman Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence) led three Stonehill runners in the 3000-meter steeplechase with her NCAA Championship provisional qualifying mark of 11:18.09 to place 11th overall out of 25 competitors. Freshman Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) was 15th in 11:25.07, while classmate Lynley Joynt (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) was 20th in 11:33.93.

Senior Megan Rocha (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) placed 11th in the discus throw with her distance of 125’05”.

Stonehill’s 4x400-meter relay team placed 14th with a time of 4:01.87. Running for the Skyhawks were Carrier, senior Kathryn O’Leary (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia), junior Danielle Wheeler (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and sophomore Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson).

Stonehill’s 4x800-meter relay team finished 17th in 9:52.11. Running that event for the Skyhawks were Joynt, Alves, junior Lindsay Booth (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and freshman Alexis Monahan (Swoyersville, Pa./Holy Redeemer).

Stonehill finished 16th out of 39 schools competing at the championship saw four athletes earn All-New England status over the weekend. Freshman Jessica Jarrard (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hudson Catholic) earned All-New England honors on Friday in the 10,000-meter run with her time of 39:46.13 to finish sixth.

Stonehill returns to action on Friday for the New Balance High Performance Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell, starting at 4 p.m.
