Skyhawk freshman provisionally qualifies for NCAA Championships in javelin

DEDHAM, Mass. (May 7, 2010) – The Stonehill College women’s outdoor track and field team completed day one at the 2010 New England Championships, hosted by Northeastern University, at Solomon Stadium on Friday.

Freshman Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) led the way on day one for Stonehill by provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships in Charlotte, N.C., later this month in the javelin throw. She placed third in the event this afternoon with her school-record throw of 131’04, breaking her own previous record of 130’05” set in winning the NE-10 championship for the event last weekend.

Sophomore Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) sits in third place in the heptathlon after four events with 2,258 points, 353 behind leader Kathryn Early (2,611 points) from the University of New Hampshire.

Shelkova was second among heptathlon competitors for both the shot put, with a throw of 31’05.75”, and 200-meter dash with her time of 27.96-seconds. Shelkova will complete the heptathlon by competing in the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run on Saturday.

Freshman Jessica Jarrard (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hudson Catholic) placed sixth out of 12 runners in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 39:46.13.

Senior Kathryn O’Leary (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) finished tenth out of 31 competitors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.94.

Freshman Stephanie Wilson (Wayzata, Minn./Hopkins) led three Skyhawks in the field of 28 runners in the 5000-meter run with an 18th-place finish in 18:21.32. Freshman Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) was 21st in 18:32.50, while sophomore Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) finished 23rd in 18:43.99.

Freshman Kathryn Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) placed 13th out of 28 runners attempting to qualify for tomorrow’s final in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 15.78-seconds in today’s preliminary heats.

The New England Championships conclude with a full slate of events at Solomon Stadium on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
