EASTON, Mass. (March 31, 2010) – Two members of the Stonehill College women’s indoor track and field team have earned weekly honors from the Northeast-10 Conference.

Sophomore Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) was named the NE-10 women’s Field Athlete of the Week, while cross country All-American Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence) was selected as women’s track freshman of the week. It marks the second Freshman of the Week award of the year for Carmone, who collected the honors for indoor track on February 2.

Shelkova earns Field Athlete of the Week honors for the first time after turning in strong performances in three events in Stonehill’s first outdoor event of the year at the Worcester City Championships, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute, on Saturday. She won the long jump with a distance of 16’3.75”. She was also fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 33’4.75” and placed ninth in the 200-meter dash in 29.62-seconds.

Shelkova is coming off an indoor season in which she placed ninth at the NE-10 Championships for the triple jump (32'8.25") and tenth in the long jump (16'4.50"). She owns the school record for the indoor triple jump with a distance of 35’2.5” set at the 2009 NE-10 Championships at Southern Connecticut State University to place second and earn All-Northeast-10 honors. She also placed fourth in the triple jump as a freshman.

Carmone, the Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year for both cross country and indoor track & field, won a 1500-meter event at Saturday’s Worcester City Championships packed with Stonehill runners with a time of 4:49.14. She led a Skyhawks contingent which saw four of the six runners entered in the event in the top ten.

Carmone is coming off an indoor season in which she captured a pair of Northeast-10 Championships in the 3000-meter run (10:34.46) and 4x800-meter relay. She posted the second-fastest 3000m time in the NE-10 this winter with her fifth-place finish (10:12.95) at the Reebok Boston Collegiate Indoor Games in late January.

Carmone became just the fourth All-American in the history of the women's cross country program this fall as her 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Championships with a time of 21:33.7 over six-kilometers. She was also named Division II East Region Women's Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), after capturing the regional title with a time of 22:16.5 over 6K at the regional, Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Year and first team All-Northeast-10 after placing second and the NE-10 Championships (18:23.2, 5K) in her collegiate debut after injuries kept her out of most of the Skyhawks cross country season.

Stonehill is back in action on Saturday when it participates in the Bryant University Invitational in Rhode Island.
