Carrier and O'Leary post top five finishes in 500m

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (December 12, 2009) - The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team closed out its first semester of competition at the Harvard Open in the Gordon Track and Tennis Center today.

Once again, it was Stonehill's middle-distance athletes that shined for the second-straight week. Sophomore Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) and senior Kathryn O'Leary (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth, respectively in the 500-meter dash to highlight the afternoon for the Skyhawks. Carrier posted a time of 1:21.52, followed closely by O'Leary in 1:21.75.

Freshmen Jessica Jarrard (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hudson Catholic) and Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) made their indoor debuts for Stonehill after fine cross country seasons. Jarrard placed sixth in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:57.98, while Veit finished eighth in the mile with a time of 5:23.04.

Other results for Stonehill today included:

Freshman Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) placed ninth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.82-seconds, after advancing to the finals with a time of 9.89-seconds in the preliminaries.

Senior Meghan Rocha (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) placed 17th in the weight throw with a distance of 11.15-meters (36'6.98").

Junior Danielle Wheeler (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) placed 18th in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.86.

Sophomore Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) finished 19th in the long jump with a distance of 4.73-meters (15'6.22').

Stonehill is now off until Saturday, January 23, when it participates in the Wheaton College Invitational in Norton.
