O'Leary, Carmone and Jarrard qualify for New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. (December 13, 2010) - The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team joined a big field competing at the Boston University Valentine's Invitational at the BU Track & Tennis Center on Friday.

Leading the way for Stonehill was its 4x400-meter relay team which shattered the school record for the second-straight week as it finished 19th overall, out of 35 entries, with a time of 4:02.61. Running for the Skyhawks were senior Kathryn O'Leary (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia), junior Danielle Wheeler (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and sophomores Susan O'Connell (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) and Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central). The team won its heat race and broke the previous record of 4:07.65 they set last weekend at the Tufts Stampede. They were 16th among collegiate entries and third among Division II relay teams.

O'Leary also qualified for the New England Championships in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:19.41 to place 17th out of 51 entries. She was 13th among collegiate entries and the top Division II finisher. Carrier placed 65th (out of 145 entries) in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.73. O'Connell placed 48th (out of 165) in the 800-meters with a time of 2:19.90.

Freshmen Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence) and Jessica Jarrard (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hudson Catholic) both qualified for the New England Championships later this month in the 5000-meter run, finishing back-to-back in 23rd and 24th, respectively, out of 62 competitors. Carmone posted a time of 18:05.48, while Jarrard finished in 18:05.75. Classmate Lynley Joynt (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) took 34th overall in 18:29.31.

Other results for Stonehill included:
Junior Lindsey Booth (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) placed 23rd out of 43 competitors in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:07.89.

Sophomore Vlada Shelkova (Newington, Conn./Newington) finished 25th (out of 39 entries) in the long jump with a distance of 15'5.50".

Freshman Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) finished 40th (out of 70 competitors) in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.64-seconds.

Junior Lindsey Pinkham (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan) placed 41st, out of 165 entries, in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.43.

Freshman Kathryn Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood), the school-record holder in the 55-meter high hurdles, finished 47th (out of 76 competitors) in that event with a time of 9.04-seconds. Classmate Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) finished 50th in 9.06-seconds.

Freshman Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) and sophomore Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) placed 51st and 52nd, respectively in the mile run out of 140 entries. Veit posted a time of 5:16.96, while Alves finished in 5:17.19. They were 38th and 39th among collegiate entries and first and second among Division II runners.

Stonehill is back in action on Thursday for the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, co-hosted by Stonehill, Bentley University and the University of Massachusetts Lowell, at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston, beginning at 4 p.m.
