Carmone wins steeplechase, Rocha and Dyson set school records for Skyhawks

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (April 4, 2010) – The Stonehill College women’s outdoor track and field team turned in a strong performance at the Bryant University Invitational on Saturday.

Freshman Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence), an All-American in cross country for Stonehill this year, was the lone individual winner as she placed first in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:33.38. The Skyhawks put their three runners all in the top four for the event as Carmone was followed by freshman Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) in third with a time of 11:59.98, while classmate Stephanie Wilson (Wayzata, Minn./Hopkins) was fourth in 12:23.24.

Freshman Olivia Dyson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) turned in top five performances in three events. She placed third in the javelin with a school-record throw of 125’05”, surpassing the previous record of 123’3” set by sophomore teammate Erica Insel (Clinton, N.J./Vorhees) at last year’s Bryant Invitational. Dyson also placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5’01.75”, and fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.38-seconds.

Insel finished ninth in the javelin with throw of 110’00”, while also placing ninth in the shot put with a distance of 34’02.75”.

Senior Meghan Rocha (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) broke her own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 128’06” to place sixth overall. Her previous school record of 127’ was set at the Bryant Invitational in 2007. Rocha also placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 110’11”.

Stonehill’s 4x400-meter relay team placed second with a time of 4:08.51. Running for the Skyhawks were senior Kathryn O’Leary (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia), juniors Danielle Wheeler (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and Lindsey Booth (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and sophomore Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central).

O’Leary also placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.45, while Wheeler was seventh in 1:12.82. Booth was third in the 800-meter run in 2:27.24, while Carrier was third for the 400-meter dash in 59.08.

Freshman Alexis Monahan (Swoyersville, Pa./Holy Redeemer) placed second in the 800-meter run in 2:25.87.

Freshman Kathryn Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.84.

Freshman Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./Seekonk) placed fifth in the 5000-meter run in 19:34.18. Classmates Jessica Jarrard (Shrewsbury, Mass./Hudson Catholic) finished sixth in 20:04.66, and Jessica Kilpatrick (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) was ninth in 21:49.16.

Sophomore Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson Regional) placed fifth in the 1500-meter run in 4:55.56. Classmate Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) took seventh in 5:02.93, while senior Bridget DeVincent (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) was 14th in 5:19.48.

Freshman Emily Cure (Altamonte, N.Y./Guilderland) finished fifth in the pole vault with a height of 7”6.00”.

Freshman Danielle Scaglione (Somersworth, N.H./Somersworth) placed seventh in the javelin with throw of 117’09”, while sophomore Kamilia Drogosz (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) was eighth with distance of 114’06”.

Junior Angela Miller (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) finished eighth in the 200-meter dash in 28.74, to go with a tenth place finish in the 100-meter dash in 14.15.

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday for the George Davis Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
