Smith, Tabacco Set School Records In Respective Events As Women's Outdoor Track And Field Squad Enjoys Solid Individual Performances At UMass Lowell George Davis Invitational

LOWELL, Mass.-- Both Stonehill outdoor track and field teams received solid individual performances on Saturday afternoon at the UMass Lowell George Davis Invitational, as a total of six Chieftains qualified for the upcoming all-New England Championships on the day.

Junior Erin Smith (Brockton, Mass.) led the way on the women’s side by finishing third in the 5,000 meters with a school-record time of 17:32.9, as she qualified provisionally for the NCAA national championships and also qualified for the New England Championships. Sophomore Kelly Chaisson (Walpole, Mass.) finished right behind Smith in the 5,000 meters in fourth place with a time of 17:56.88, which also qualified for the all-New England Championships.

Senior Tracy Tabacco (Methuen, Mass.) set a school record and qualified for the New England Championships in the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet ¼ inches, as she also set a school record in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.12. Sophomore Dana DeIngenis (Cranston, R.I.) was a New England qualifier as well for Stonehill in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:50.68.

On the men’s side, sophomore Vinnie Williams (Springfield, Mass.) won the 100 meters with a time of 10.97, and he set a school record with a third place time of 22.39 in the 200 meters, qualifying for the all-New England Championships in both events in the process. Williams was also part of Stonehill’s second place performance in the 4 X 100 relay that qualified for the New England and IC4A Championships, as he joined senior Sotirios Pintzopoulos (North Reading, Mass.), junior Paul Viggiano (Trumbull, Conn.) and sophomore Kevin Dubuc (East Greenwich, R.I.) in posting a time of 42.47. Freshman Thomas Woods (Medfield, Mass.) broke his own school record for the Chieftains in the 400 hurdles, posting a time of 56.26 in the event.

Both Stonehill squads return to action next Saturday morning by traveling to Dedham, Mass. to participate in the Northeastern Invitational that begins at 10:00 a.m.
