Smith Qualifies For All-New Englands In 3000 Meters As Women's Indoor Track And Field Shines At Tufts Invitational

MEDFORD, Mass.-- Both Stonehill indoor track and field teams shined during competition at the Tufts Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as three individuals qualified for the upcoming New England Championships in their respective events.

Senior Sotirios Pintzopoulos (North Reading, Mass.) was a double winner on the men’s side for the Chieftains in the 55 and 200 meters, respectively, with times of 6.63 and 22.8, as he qualified for the New England Championships in the 200 meters. Freshman Richard Gerry (Bow, N.H.) was second in the 1,000 meters and also qualified for the New England Championships with a time of 2:30.75 in setting a freshman record in the event, while sophomore Dana Burbank (North Andover, Mass.) and freshman Keith Gill (Brockton, Mass.) were also second in the 55 meter high hurdles and 3,000 meters, respectively, with times of 8.01 and 8:46.52. The men’s 4 X 800 relay team of Gerry, seniors Sean McKeon (Millbury, Mass.) and Fran Guardabascio (Mansfield, Mass.), along with freshman David Metzger (Ellington, Conn.), placed second in the event with a time of 8:03.

On the women’s side, junior Erin Smith (Brockton, Mass.) qualified for the New England Championships in the 3,000 meters, as she finished second with a time of 10:24.73 in the event.

Both Stonehill squads return to action next weekend when the Chieftains travel to Boston, Mass. to participate in the two-day Boston University Valentine Classic, with Friday’s action beginning at 4:00 p.m. and Saturday’s events to begin at 10:00 a.m.
