Chivakos, Smith And Buckley Earn All-League Accolades As Women's Indoor Track And Field Posts Second Place Finish At Northeast-10 Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn.-- Four individuals took top honors in their respective events and earned all-conference accolades in the process as both Stonehill indoor track and field teams posted solid performances at the 2005 Northeast-10 Conference Championships hosted at Southern Connecticut’s Moore Fieldhouse Friday evening, as the Chieftain women posted their highest team finish ever with a second place showing while the men’s squad placed third in the competition.

Senior Dianna Chivakos (South Hamilton, Mass.) led the way on the women’s side for Stonehill, as she took top honors in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:26.07, while juniors Erin Smith (Brockton, Mass.) and Kaitlin Buckley (North Kingstown, R.I.) won the mile and 5,000 meters, respectively, with times of 5:14.38 and 18:37.11. The women’s 4 X 800 relay team of Chivakos, junior Caitlin Callahan (Simsbury, Conn.), sophomore Dana DeIngenis (Cranston, R.I.) and freshman Meghan Barrett (Norfolk, Mass.) captured all-conference honors with a first place time of 10:07, while the distance medley relay team of junior Kristen Metzger (Ellington, Conn.), sophomore Kelly Chaisson (Walpole, Mass.) and freshmen Mary Donovan (Sudbury, Mass.) and Lesley Clunie (Newburyport, Mass.) also finished first for Stonehill, which posted 136 points to finish as runner-up to UMass Lowell while besting host Southern Connecticut by a 42 point margin.

On the men’s side, freshman Keith Gill (Brockton, Mass.) earned the nod as the 2005 Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year in a vote of the league’s coaches, as he finished second in the mile during the competition with a time of 4:20.78. Fellow freshman Richard Gerry (Bow, N.H.) finished first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.41, while sophomore Dana Burbank (North Andover, Mass.) set a school record in the 55 meter high hurdles with a time of 7.91 and qualified for next weekend’s New England Championships in the process. Sophomore Vinnie Williams (Springfield, Mass.) set a school record in the 55 meters with a time of 6.57, and he joined senior Sotirios Pintzopoulos (North Reading, Mass.) in qualifying for the New England Championships in the event, as Pintzopoulos posted a time of 6.62. Stonehill posted a team score of 85 points to finish behind team champion Southern Connecticut (213) and runner-up UMass Lowell (205).

Both Stonehill squads will be in action next weekend at the New England Championships to be hosted by Boston University, as Friday’s action begins at 4:00 p.m. and Saturday’s events begin at 10:00 a.m.
