ABILENE, Tex.-- Stonehill senior Dianna Chivakos (South Hamilton, Mass.) has advanced to the national championship race in the 3,000 meters at the 2005 NCAA Division II Women’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championships being hosted by Abilene Christian, as she placed 11th in the preliminary heat on Thursday evening at Elmer Gray Stadium with a time of 10:02.72.

Chivakos advances to her second NCAA national championship race of the calendar year, as she also competed for the 2005 NCAA indoor national crown in the 5,000 meters last March at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

Friday’s 3,000 meter national championship race will take place at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time (7:30 p.m. local time), as the top 12 individuals advanced to the national championship race after the field of 17 qualifiers was pared down in two preliminary heats on Thursday evening.

Chieftain junior Erin Smith (Brockton, Mass.) just missed qualifying for the national championship race in her preliminary round heat, as she posted a time of 10:08.62 but finished 14th among qualifiers on the night.
