Solorzano Valencia Sweeps NE10 Weekly Honors

EASTON, Mass. (October 22, 2019) – Stonehill College freshman Cristina Solorzano Valencia has swept the Northeast-10 Conference weekly awards for women's tennis, the league office announced today.

Solorzano Valencia has been named the NE10 Player of the Week for the first time in her career, while adding NE10 Rookie of the Week accolades for the second-straight week and third time this season overall. She posted a combined 3-1 record in singles and doubles play in a 1-1 week for Stonehill to close out the fall regular season. She won both of her matches at No. 1 singles, while splitting her matches at No. 2 doubles with senior Annelise Howick. Solorzano Valencia was a double-winner as the Skyhawks clinched a share of their fourth-straight NE10 regular season championship with Monday's 7-0 win at Le Moyne College. She and Howick clinched the doubles point for Stonehill with their 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, and then added a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 1 singles against Le Moyne sophomore Birdem Oz. Solorzano Valencia capped the week with an impressive 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles against Division I Bryant University's Ada Boru.

Solorzano Valencia is a combined 26-7 in singles and doubles play in her first collegiate season. She has posted a 13-3 singles record, including 8-2 in the NE10, going 7-1 at the No. 1 flight and 3-1 at No. 2. Solorzano Valencia has also posted a 13-4 doubles record, including 8-2 in the NE10, teaming up with Howick for a 12-3 record, including 7-1 in the NE10. Solorzano Valencia and Howick also reached the semifinal round of the USTA/ITA East Regional in September, while she also advanced to the singles quarterfinals. In addition to earning NE10 Rookie of the Week honors each of the last two weeks, she collected the award on September 17 after the first two weeks of her collegiate career.

Stonehill (9-3, 9-1 NE10), having clinched its tenth NE10 regular season championship in program history last week, is seeded third in this week's NE10 Tournament after finishing tied with top-seeded Adelphi University and second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University atop the standings. The Skyhawks will host a first round match with sixth-seeded University of New Haven tomorrow at 1 p.m.
