Solorzano and Vo reach singles quarterfinals, Solorzano/Howick advance to make doubles semifinal

FLUSHING, N.Y. (September 16, 2019) – Stonehill College wrapped up a solid weekend at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional, held at the USTA/Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Sunday.

Freshman Cristina Solorzano Valencia highlighted Stonehill's weekend by reaching the quarterfinal round of the women's singles championship, while also teaming up with senior Annelise Howick to advance to the semifinal round of the women's doubles semifinals. The Skyhawks duo matched the deepest run at the ITA East Regionals in program history, set by Victoria Barbetta, '18 and current junior Isabelle Porter in 2017.

Solorzano Valencia and Howick opened the day by defeating Stonehill teammates Porter and freshman Steffi Antao, the No. 6-seed, in the doubles quarterfinal, 8-4. Stonehill's duo was then halted in the semifinals by Adelphi University's Barbie Quagliardi and Julia Kielen, the No. 4-seed, 8-4 in the semifinal round.

Solorzano Valencia and senior Alexandra Vo, seeded No. 8, both reached the women's singles quarterfinals on Sunday, marking the second-straight year Stonehill has placed at least one women's player in the quarters, after Porter was the first in program history to do so in 2018. Solorzano Valencia upset fifth-seeded Angelika Hantzis from Concordia (N.Y.) College, 6-0, 6-1 in the Round of 16, before being edged by No. 2-seed, Luisa Auffarth, 6-2, 4-6, 10-1 in the quarters. Vo, who had reached the Round of 16 her two previous years at Stonehill, posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Queens (N.Y.) College's Gabriella Sciarotta, before being defeated by 13th-seeded Maja Makal from Queens, 6-2, 6-3 in the quarters.
