Bertsch leads four double-winners for Judges

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 14, 2019) – Brandeis University, ranked No. 14 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III national rankings, picked up a 9-0 victory over Stonehill College, ranked No. 28 in the Oracle/ITA Division II national rankings, in non-conference women's tennis action at Rieger Tennis Courts today.

Sophomore Lauren Bertsch led four double-winners for Brandeis with victories at No. 1 singles and doubles. She and senior Olivia Leavitt, ranked No. 7 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division III Northeast doubles rankings, opened with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles for the Judges. Bertsch followed that up with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stonehill sophomore Isabelle Porter, ranked No. 12 in the Oracle/ITA Division II East Region singles rankings, which proved to be the match clinching point for the Judges.

Senior Sophia He and sophomore Ana Hatfield combined for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles for Brandeis, but both needed to battle back from a set down in their singles matches. He dropped the first set to Stonehill junior Alexandra Vo, ranked No. 14 in the Oracle/ITA Division II East doubles rankings, 6-3 before taking the second, 7-5 and then winning the third set super tiebreaker, 10-8. Hatfield also lost the first set to sophomore Emma Markaryan, 6-3, but picked up the second, 6-3 and then took the tiebreaker, 10-8.

Sophomore Isabel Cepeda rounded out the double-winners for Brandeis with decisions at No. 2 doubles and No. 6 singles.

Stonehill (14-5, 11-0 NE10) now awaits its seeding for the upcoming NCAA Division II Tournament, when selections are announced on Tuesday, May 7. The first NCAA II regional rankings are due to be released this week. Brandeis (11-5, 0-0 UAA) is off until the University Athletic Association Championships April 25-27 in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
