Oropeza leads Bulldogs as double-winner

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (October 5, 2018) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 42 in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II rankings, stepped out of Northeast-10 Conference play and was dealt a 5-2 setback by NCAA Division I Bryant University, a former NE10 rival, in non-conference women's tennis action at the Bryant Tennis Complex today.

Sophomore Arianna Oropeza was the lone double-winner for Bryant, which got all ten of its student-athletes in the match, for the afternoon. She combined with classmate Caterina Luisa Rokke for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles as the Bulldogs swept doubles play to clinch a point. Oropeza followed that up with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Stonehill sophomore Isabelle Porter at No. 1 singles.

Juniors Megan Tan, Aleksi Gottlieb and Gabrielle Bergeron also added singles wins for Bryant for the afternoon. Freshmen Yasemin Boru and Sarah Hickey rallied from 1-4 down for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles for the Bulldogs, while sophomore Carolina Betancourt and freshman Leanne Kendall rallied from 1-3 down for a 6-3 decision at No. 3.

Senior Nicole Downey and freshman Emma Markaryan arned points for Stonehill. Markaryan battled past Kendall 7-6 (7-4), 0-6, 10-4 at No. 5 singles for the Skyhawks. Downey rolled to a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 6 singles against Bryant sophomore Haley Pollock.

Stonehill (6-1, 6-0 NE10) is right back in action tomorrow, when it visits American International College for an NE10 match at noon. The Skyhawks return home on Wednesday, October 10, to host Merrimack College on Senior Day at Watt Courts at 3 p.m. Bryant (1-0, 0-0 NEC) will participate in the ITA Division I Northeast Regional next weekend.
