#42 Women's Tennis Tops Regionally-Ranked Le Moyne, 6-1

Downey clinches Skyhawks 16th-straight NE10 regular season win


Downey earned the clinching point for the Skyhawks with her win at #6 singles after adding a doubles win earlier.

EASTON, Mass. (September 23, 2018) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 42 in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II rankings, picked up a key early season victory with a 6-1 triumph over Le Moyne College, ranked No. 9 in the Oracle/ITA East Region rankings, in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action on Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Senior Nicole Downey, junior Alexandra Vo and freshman Samantha Ormesher led Stonehill to its 16th-straight NE10 regular season victory as double-winners on the afternoon. Vo and Ormesher teamed up for the first time due to injury and rallied for a 6-4 decision to clinch the doubles point for the Skyhawks at No. 2. Vo later added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles against Le Moyne freshman Birdem Oz, while Ormesher battled past sophomore Caroline St. Antoine for a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 triumph at No. 3 singles.

Downey and junior Caroline Ray combined for a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles for Stonehill. Downey then clinched the match win for the Skyhawks with her 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 6 singles against Le Moyne sophomore Camila Humala, rallying from 2-4 down in the second set for the win. Sophomore Isabelle Porter, ranked No. 15 in the Oracle/ITA East Region singles rankings, and freshman Emma Markaryan also earned singles wins for Stonehill at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

Sophomore Marta Nunez earned Le Moyne's lone point with her 7-6 (7-0), 5-7, 6-4 decision at No. 4 singles against Stonehill sophomore Bethany Hammond. Oz and senior Tiffany Hamdan teamed up for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles for the Dolphins.

Stonehill (3-0, 3-0 NE10) is right back in action at Watt Courts on Wednesday, when it hosts Franklin Pierce University for an NE10 match at 3 p.m. Le Moyne (4-1, 3-1 NE10) hosts American International College on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
