Women's Tennis Clinches Eighth NE10 Regular Season Title


Cunningham won at #1 doubles and #3 singles without dropping a single game over the three sets of play.

Skyhawks close out NE10 regular season with 9-0 win at Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. (October 21, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 6 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, closed out its fifth undefeated Northeast-10 Conference regular season in program history to claim its eighth NE10 regular season championship after a 9-0 victory over The College of Saint Rose in NE10 women's tennis action at Myers Middle School today.

Stonehill (13-0, 12-0 NE10) wins the NE10 regular season title for the second straight year, finishing 12-0 in the NE10 regular season for the first time since the spring 2009 campaign, running unbeaten through the Conference regular season for the fifth time in program history overall, also accomplishing the feat in 2006, 1992 and 1991. The top-seeded Skyhawks now await the winner of Wednesday's NE10 Tournament first round match between 5th-seeded Le Moyne College and No. 4 Assumption College being played in Worcester, Massachusetts, at 1 p.m. Friday's semifinal at Charles Watt Tennis Courts will start at 1 p.m., with the NE10 Championship match slated for Sunday at 1 p.m. All matches are played at the home of the higher seed. Saint Rose sees its fall season close at 0-13 overall, including 0-12 in the NE10.

Sophomore Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) and freshman Kate Cunningham (Somerset, England/IMG Academy (Fla.)) led Stonehill to the win as double-winners in the match. Vo and sophomore Annelise Howick (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside) cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles, and then Vo was the only singles player really tested, posting a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles against Saint Rose senior Averie Bowen (Pelham, New York/Pelham Memorial).

Cunningham and senior Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) breezed to an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles for Stonehill, and then Cunningham defeated sophomore Wendella Wilson (Brooklyn, New York/Cultural Academy for the Arts & Sciences) in straight sets without dropping a game. Junior Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional), sophomore Caroline Ray (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and freshman Isabelle Porter (Jupiter, Florida/William T. Dwyer) all added singles wins for the Skyhawks without dropping a game over two sets.
