Women's Tennis Clinches Bye with Gutsy Win at Le Moyne, 8-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 15, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 6 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, sewed up a first round bye for the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference tournament with an 8-1 triumph over Le Moyne College in NE10 women's tennis action at Skytop Tennis Courts today.

Senior captain Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) led Stonehill to the gutsy win in a match that started nearly 12 hours upon the conclusion of the Skyhawks six-hour marathon home win over Assumption College on Saturday night. Barbetta recorded her 100th career collegiate win when she combined with freshman Kate Cunningham (Somerset, England/IMG Academy (Fla.)) for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles that clinched a sweep of the three doubles matches. Barbetta, who has now posted a career combined record of 101-54 (.652) in singles and doubles play over her Stonehill career, added a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 1 singles against Le Moyne senior Rithika Vajjiravelu (Chennai, Indla).

Cunningham also won two points for Stonehill as she added a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles against freshman Caroline St. Antoine (Longueuil, Quebec). Sophomore Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) rounded out the Skyhawks double-winners, starting with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles with classmate Annelise Howick (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside). Vo followed that up with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles against junior Tiffany Hamdan (Johnson City, New York/Johnson City).

Senior Emma Prinos (Foxborough, Massachusetts/Foxborough) and junior Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) both added singles wins for Stonehill, while senior Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) and freshman Bethany Hammond (Belgrade, Maine/St. Dominic's) teamed up for a win at No. 3 doubles for the Skyhawks.

Freshman Marta Nunez (Rye, New York/Antonio Lopez (Spain)) earned Le Moyne's only point as she handed O'Donnell the first NE10 singles loss of her career (25-1), rallying from a set down to take the match in a third-set tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 5 singles.

Stonehill (11-0, 10-0 NE10) returns to action on Thursday, when it visits Bentley University for an NE10 match at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks next home match will be an NE10 semifinal n Friday, October 27. Le Moyne (10-4, 8-4 NE10) visits University of the District of Columbia on Friday at 11 a.m.
