EASTON, Mass. (October 14, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 6 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, battled past Assumption College, 5-3 in a six-hour Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis slugfest inside the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex tonight.

Relegated to three indoor courts to wet conditions and admissions open house, Stonehill and Assumption battled  through 13 sets across five singles matches, including four decided by tiebreakers, as the Skyhawks made a 2-1 edge following doubles play, which lasted a pedestrian 60-minutes out of the overall 358 minutes of play, stand.

Senior Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) led the way as Stonehill's lone double-winner, bringing the match to a merciful close by way of her 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) triumph at No. 5 singles over Assumption freshman Valeria Sanchez (Carolina, Puerto Rico). O'Donnell rallied from 5-1 down in the tiebreaker to seal the win after combining with freshman Bethany Hammond (Belgrade, Maine/St. Dominic's) for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. O'Donnell is now 26-0 in her career for NE10 singles matches.

The match of the night was at No. 2 singles as sophomore Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) fought past Assumption freshman Julia Chappell (Manchester, New Hampshire/Manchester Central) for a 7-5, 6-7 (7-2), 7-5 win in a match which lasted 3-hours and 40-minutes. Vo rallied from 4-1 down in the third set to remain perfect in NE10 singles matches for her career (20-0). Freshman Isabelle Porter (Jupiter, Florida/William T. Dwyer) remained unbeaten in NE10 singles play (6-0) with a win at No. 3 singles, while senior Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) and freshman Kate Cunningham (Somerset, England/IMG Academy (Fla.)) added an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles for the Skyhawks.

Senior Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, New Hampshire/Londonderry) earned two points for Assumption. She teamed up with Chappell for the Greyhounds lone doubles point with an 8-6 decision at No. 1, and then claimed a 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 6-4 triumph over Barbetta at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Maria Monje (Worcester, Massachusetts/Holy Name) also collected a win for the Greyhounds at No. 4 singles.

Stonehill (10-0, 9-0 NE10) is right back on the courts tomorrow in upstate New York, when it faces Le Moyne College for an NE10 match in Syracuse, New York, at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks next home match is a likely NE10 semifinal match on Friday, October 27. Assumption (11-2, 9-2 NE10) wraps up its regular season with a key NE10 match at Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
