Barbetta leads Skyhawks, knocking off unbeaten Perkins

EASTON, Mass. (September 30, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 6 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, kept rolling with a 9-0 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action inside the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.

Senior Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) led the list of double-winners for Stonehill with victories at No. 1 singles and doubles. She teamed up with freshman Isabelle Porter (Jupiter, Florida/William T. Dwyer) to complete the Skyhawks sweep of their doubles matches with a 9-8 (7-5) triumph at the top flight. Barbetta followed that up with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win over previously unbeaten senior Jess Perkins (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts/Shrewsbury), ranked No. 4 in the Oracle/ITA Division II East Regional singles rankings, at No. 1 singles. With her two wins today, Barbetta is now a combined 97-49 (.664) over her career in singles and doubles play.

Porter was also among the double-winners as she added a 6-2, 6-1 win over Saint Anselm sophomore Kaitlin Hughes (Rockland, Massachusetts/Cardinal Spellman) at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) earned wins at No. 2 singles and doubles for the Skyhawks, starting with an 8-2 doubles decision with classmate Annelise Howick (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside), before adding a 6-3, 6-3 singles win against junior Tess Malerbi (Scituate, Massachusetts/Scituate).

Senior Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) and freshman Kate Cunningham (Somerset, England/IMG Academy (Fla.)) rounded out Stonehill's double-winners. The duo teamed up for an 8-0 sweep at No. 3 doubles and then O'Donnell proceeded to breeze past junior Lexi Stathis (Belle Harbor, New York/New York) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Cunningham added a 6-1, 6-0 win over freshman Maikah Bulpitt (Cumberland, Rhode Island/Mount Saint Charles Academy) at No. 6. Junior Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) chipped in with a straight sets win at No. 4 singles for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill (6-0, 5-0 NE10) is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Southern New Hampshire University, ranked seventh in the region, for a battle for first place in the NE10 at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. Saint Anselm (2-4, 1-4 NE10) visits Franklin Pierce University tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
