Lozo and Hewland lead double-winners for Spartans

TAMPA, Fla. (March 8, 2017) – The University of Tampa posted a 9-0 victory over Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, at the Naimoli and Young Family Tennis Center today.

Junior Emily Hewland (Whaley Bridge, England) and sophomore Caroline Lozo (Tampa, Florida/Academy of the Holy Names) led five double-winners for Tampa. The pair combined to edge Stonehill's No. 1 doubles tandem of junior Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) and freshman Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) 9-7. Lozo followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Vo.

Barbetta also battled in her singles match with Hewland, falling in a third set tiebreak after winning the first set 7-6 (8-6), before Hewland rallied to take the second set 6-4 and then winning the third 10-4. Freshman Lilley Nice (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), sophomore Maddie Stephens (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints Episcopal) and freshman Ava Sowell (Clearwater, Florida/East Lake) all added singles and doubles wins for the Spartans.

Stonehill (13-4, 11-1 NE10) wraps up its spring break schedule tomorrow against the University of Southern Indiana at the USTA National Campus in Orlando at 11:30 a.m. Tampa (4-2, 1-2 SSC) faces Minnesota State, Mankato tomorrow at 7 p.m.
