Downey, Prinos and Ray lead Skyhawks to spring break win

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 7, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, opened its spring schedule with a decisive 7-2 victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth in non-conference women's tennis action at Fort Gatlin Tennis Center today.

Junior Emma Prinos (Foxborough, Massachusetts/Foxborough), sophomore Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) and freshman Caroline Ray (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) led the way for Stonehill as double-winners for the match. Downey teamed up with freshman Annelise Howick (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside) to clinch a 2-1 Skyhawks edge after doubles play with their 8-4 win at No. 2. Downey then put Stonehill's first singles point on the board with her 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 against Minnesota Duluth freshman Elsa Erickson (Long Mont, Colorado/Silver Creek).

Prinos and Ray combined for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles for Stonehill. Prinos then followed that up with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against freshman Macey Tellijohn (Owatonna, Minnesota/Owatonna), while Ray breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles against sophomore Rachel Menke (Jordan, Minnesota/Jordan). Freshman Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) and junior Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) each added singles wins for the Skyhawks at No. 1 and 2, respectively, with Vo's 6-1, 6-2 win over junior Shelby Benkofski (Eden Prairie, Minnesota/Hopkins) providing the match clinching fifth point.

Junior Katie Baasch (West Fargo, North Dakota/West Fargo) collected UMD's lone singles point with her 6-4, 6-1 win over Howick, while Benkofski and junior Kelsey Zetah (Cushing, Minnesota/Staples-Motley) won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.

Stonehill (13-3, 11-1 NE10) is back in action tomorrow when it visits the University of Tampa at 10 a.m. Minnesota Duluth (6-6, 4-2 NSIC) faces Saint Benedict College tonight at 6:30 p.m.
