Barbetta and Vo lead six double-winners for Skyhawks

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October 5, 2016) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, returned to the courts after a long weekend off with a commanding 9-0 victory at the University of New Haven at UNH Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Junior captain Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) and freshman Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) led Stonehill to its ninth straight win as the entire lineup recorded singles and doubles wins on the afternoon. The Skyhawks dropped just five games total over the nine matches, with Barbetta and Vo closing out a sweep of the three doubles matches with their 8-1 victory at No. 1. Barbetta followed that up with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against New Haven sophomore Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, New York/Center Moriches). Vo improved to 9-0 in her first collegiate season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles over sophomore Ashley Varrone (Shelton, Connecticut/Shelton).

Juniors Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) and Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville), sophomore Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) and freshman Carolina Alvarez (Orlando, Florida/Freedom) rounded out Stonehill's double-winners for the afternoon. Prinos, Downey and Alvarez did so without losing a game over three sets of play between their singles and doubles matches. Downey also improved to 9-0 in singles play this fall, improving to 18-1 over her career in NE-10 singles matches, while Prinos won her sixth straight match and O'Donnell improved to 8-0 this fall and 17-0 in her career in NE-10 matches.

Stonehill (9-1, 9-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it opens a big weekend of road matches at Assumption College at 11 a.m., before closing out the weekend at Adelphi University, ranked fifth in the region, on Sunday at 10 a.m. New Haven (2-10, 2-9 NE-10) hosts Le Moyne College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
