NCAA FIRST ROUND: #3 Concordia Advances Past #6 Women's Tennis, 5-1

Mecchi and Tegtmeier lead Clippers into second round

FLUSHING, N.Y. (May 7, 2016) – Third-seeded Concordia (N.Y.) College defeated sixth-seeded Stonehill College 5-1 to advance in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division II Tournament East Regional, hosted by second-seeded Queens (N.Y.) College, at the Queens College Tennis Center today.

Concordia (11-6, 7-0 CACC) advances to tomorrow's second round against Queens (16-3, 6-1 ECC), ranked 45th in the ITA Division II rankings, at 10 a.m. Stonehill sees its season come to a close with a 15-10 record overall, 10-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, having made the tenth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.

Junior Constanza Mecchi (Rome Italy) and freshman Kaja Tegtmeier (Oldenberg, Germany) led Concordia as double-winners today. Mecchi, the No. 23-ranked singles player in Division II by the ITA, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win against Stonehill senior Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Michigan/Marian) at No. 1 singles. Mecchi and junior Stefanie Canals-Baker (Pollensa, Spain), the third-ranked doubles team in the region by the ITA, combined for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles as the Clippers won two of the three doubles matches.

Tegtmeier and senior Linda Eliasson (Gothenburg, Sweden), the ninth-ranked doubles team in the region by the ITA, competed at No. 3 and clinched Concordia's advantage after doubles play with their 8-3 win. Tegtmeier followed that up with a 7-5, 6-0 win against senior Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, Rhode Island/The Lincoln School) at No. 5 singles. Junior Valeriia Cheban (Odessa, Ukraine) also earned a point for the Clippers with her 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles against freshman Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional).

Senior Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and sophomore Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) teamed up for Stonehill's point with their 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles against Cheban and junior Antonia Conze (Willich, Germany). Kump was also into a third set at No. 3 singles against Conze when the match ended.
