Stonehill Sweeps NE-10 Weekly Women’s Tennis Honors Again

EASTON, Mass. (April 19, 2016) – The Stonehill College women's tennis program swept the weekly Northeast-10 Conference awards for the second time in three weeks with sophomore Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) being named the league's Player of the Week and freshman Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) being selected as Rookie of the Week.

Barbetta earns NE-10 Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career, both coming within the last three weeks, after leading Stonehill to a 4-3 triumph at NCAA Division I University of Hartford in its lone match of the week on Sunday. She teamed up with sophomore Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) to help lead a sweep of the three doubles matches with a 7-5 decision at No. 2. Barbetta followed that by dispatching Hartford senior Hannah Goldman 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

Downey collects NE-10 Rookie of the Week accolades for the fourth time over her freshman season, including twice over the last three weeks as well, for Stonehill. She was also a double-winner in Sunday's win at Hartford, combining with senior Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Michigan/Marian) for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Downey went on to rally for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles against Hartford sophomore Emily Lindsley.

Barbetta, who earned All-Northeast-10 first team honors at No. 3 singles and second team accolades at No. 2 doubles this season, is a combined 39-10 in singles and doubles play in her sophomore season. She has posted a 22-3 mark in singles matches, including a perfect 11-0 in the NE-10, to go with a 17-7 doubles mark with three different playing partners, including 7-2 in NE-10 matches. Barbetta and senior Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) combined to reach the quarterfinal round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional in September.

Barbetta, selected to the NE-10 All-Rookie Team as a freshman, has posted a combined 66-27 (.710) record in singles and doubles play over her Stonehill career, including 38-7 (.844) in NE-10 matches. She is 36-11 in her two seasons in singles play, including 21-2 in NE-10 matches, while posting a 30-16 doubles mark, including 17-5 in NE-10 play. Barbetta has been named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll all three semesters and Athletic Director's Honor Roll two semesters to date.

Downey has earned All-Northeast-10 third team honors for No. 5 singles as well as a spot on the NE-10 All-Rookie Team to highlight a strong freshman season at Stonehill. She also won the B-draw at the ITA East Regional in September, also earning NE-10 Commissioner's and Athletic Director's Honor Roll status for her efforts in the classroom during the fall semester. Downey is a combined 34-10 in singles and doubles play during her freshman year, including 16-2 in NE-10 play. She has posted a 20-4 singles mark, including 7-1 in NE-10 play, while notching a 14-6 doubles record with an incredible seven different playing partners, including 9-1 in NE-10 matches.

Stonehill (15-9, 10-2 NE-10), ranked sixth in the most recent ITA Division II East Regional rankings, is ranked sixth in the first NCAA Division II East Region rankings released last week by the regional advisory committee. The Skyhawks seek their tenth NCAA Tournament bid in program history when the Division II selection show airs on Tuesday, May 3, at 8:30 p.m., on ncaa.com.
