Women's Tennis Fights Past Saint Anselm, 6-3


Sophomore Victoria Barbetta posted wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles today.

Barbetta and Downey lead Skyhawks as double-winners 

EASTON, Mass. (September 13, 2015) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, rebounded from a heartbreaking setback midweek and cruised to a 6-3 decision over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action in the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.

Sophomore Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) and freshman Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) were both double-winners to lead Stonehill to its first NE-10 win of the season. Barbetta combined with senior co-captain Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) for an 8-2 win at No.2 doubles as the Skyhawks clinched a 2-1 edge in doubles play. Barbetta followed that up with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles against Saint Anselm sophomore Meghan Golden (Scituate, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy).

Downey and senior Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, Rhode Island/The Lincoln School) breezed to an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Downey followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against junior Katie Roberts (South Windsor, Connecticut/South Windsor). Sophomore Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) provided the match clinching point for the Skyhawks with her 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles against senior Kathryn Rindo (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell Catholic). Junior Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colorado/D'Evelyn) blanked senior Leah Fitzgerald (Bedford, New Hampshire/Lejeune (N.C.)) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.

Sophomore Jess Perkins (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts/Shrewsbury) was a double-winner for Saint Anselm. She and Golden teamed up for the Hawks lone doubles point with their 8-4 win at No. 1. Perkins also posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles against Stonehill senior Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Michigan/Marian). Freshman Tess Malerbi (Scituate, Massachusetts/Scituate) received a win at No. 2 singles when Kump retired while holding a 4-1 lead in the first set.

Stonehill (2-1, 1-1 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it visits Merrimack College, ranked ninth in the region, in a rematch of last year's NE-10 Championship match at 2 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Friday, September 25, to host Adelphi University, ranked eighth in the region, for their Purple & White match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. Saint Anselm (2-2, 1-1 NE-10) hosts Bentley University on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
