NCAA TOURNAMENT: #33 Queens Defeats Stonehill, 5-0

Plevako and Mehter post singles and doubles wins to lead Knights 

FLUSHING, N.Y. (May 2, 2015) – Third-seeded Queens (N.Y.) College, ranked 33rd in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II rankings, posted a 5-0 victory over sixth-seeded Stonehill College in opening round action of the 2015 NCAA Division II Tournament Women's Tennis East Regional today.

Queens (16-4, 7-1 ECC) advances to tomorrow's East Regional second round to face second-seeded and No. 26-ranked Concordia (N.Y.) College tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Stonehill, which captured the Northeast-10 Conference championship in the fall, sees its season come to a close with a 13-8 record overall, including 10-2 in Northeast-10 play.

Senior Yevgeniya Plevako (Astana, Kazakhstan) and graduate student Aylin Mehter (Massapequa, New York/Massapequa) both won their singles and doubles matches to lead Queens into the next round. The Knights swept the three doubles matches without dropping a game to send the hosts on their way to the second round. Plevako, the 33rd-ranked singles player in Division II by the ITA posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Stonehill freshman Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) at No. 1 singles. Plevako and junior Andrea Samson (Key Biscayne, Florida/LaSalle), the fifth-ranked doubles team in the East Region, posted an 8-0 win at No. 2.

Mehter posted Queens second singles victory with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Stonehill senior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, Rhode Island/Mount Saint Charles Academy) at No. 3. Mehter and sophomore Cami Abaullah (Rabat, Morocco) teamed up for a win at No. 3 doubles.

Freshman Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) was leading her match at No. 2 singles for Stonehill 5-4 in the first set when play was halted after Queens earned its fifth point in the dual match.
