NE-10 FIRST ROUND: #3 Stonehill Advances Past Assumption, 5-2

Barbetta and Lawrence lead Skyhawks to NE-10 semifinal at SNHU 

EASTON, Mass. (October 21, 2014) – Third-seeded Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, advanced to the Conference semifinals for the 13th time in program history with a 5-2 decision over sixth-seeded Assumption College in first round action of the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis tournament at the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.

Stonehill (11-2, 10-2 NE-10) travels to Friday's NE-10 semifinal at second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University (11-1, 11-1 NE-10) at 2 p.m. Should the match need to move indoors for inclement weather, it will be played at the YMCA Allard Center in Goffstown, New Hampshire, at 5:30 p.m. Assumption closes out its fall season with a 7-8 record overall, including a 7-5 mark in the NE-10 to make its first Conference tournament appearance since 2009.

Senior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, Rhode Island/Mount Saint Charles Academy) and freshman Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) were both double winners to lead Stonehill to the first round win. Barbetta and junior Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) combined for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles as the Skyhawks won two of the three doubles matches to gain an early advantage. Barbetta added the clinching fifth point with her 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles against Assumption freshman Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Massachusetts/St. Thomas Aquinas).

Lawrence and freshman Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) remained unbeaten for Stonehill with their 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Lawrence followed with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over junior Marie Black (Palmyra, New York/Palmyra-Macedon) to draw the Skyhawks within a point of victory. Junior Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Michigan/Marian) posted the Skyhawks first singles win with her 6-2, 6-4 decision against freshman Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, New Hampshire/Londonderry) at No. 1.

Burbine and sophomore Hannah Riley (Ellington, Connecticut/Ellington) teamed up for an Assumption point with their 8-3 decision at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Aida Vila (Girona, Spain) earned a point for the Greyhounds with her 6-2, 6-1 win over Kump at No. 2 singles.
