Southern N.H. Edges Stonehill in Key NE-10 Clash, 5-4

Penmen clinch No. 2 seed, first round bye, for upcoming NE-10 Tournament 

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 14, 2014) – Southern New Hampshire University, ranked tenth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, claimed a key 5-4 victory over ninth-ranked Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at SNHU Courts this afternoon.

Senior Diana Vamvakitis (Wading River, New York/Westhampton Beach) and junior Ashley Loft (Leysin, Switzerland) led Southern New Hampshire to the victory that secures the No. 2 seed and first round bye for the upcoming NE-10 Tournament which starts next week. The Penmen will host a semifinal against the winner of Stonehill's first round matchup with the No. 6 seed. Vamvakitis and Loft combined for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles as SNHU took two of the three doubles matches to get an early leg up in the match. Vamvakitis followed that up with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Stonehill junior Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Michigan/Marian), while Loft secured a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles against junior Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth).

Post grad Sarah Schollgen (Meerbusch, Germany) secured the winning fifth point with her 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles against freshman Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro). Schollgen and senior Jamie Hann (Westhampton, New York/Westhampton Beach) combined for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles as well.

Senior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, Rhode Island/Mount Saint Charles Academy) and freshman Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) were double-winners for Stonehill. The doubles pairing remained undefeated in NE-10 play with their 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles. Lawrence added an 8-2 win over junior Yolanda Green (Springfield, Massachusetts/Longmeadow) at No. 5 singles, while O'Donnell defeated freshman Lindsay Baum (North Salem, New York/North Salem) 8-1 at No. 6. Freshman Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) earned the Skyhawks remaining point with a come from behind 4-6, 7-5, 10-3 decision over Hann at No. 4 singles.

Stonehill (8-2, 8-2 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow when it visits American International College for a Northeast-10 matchup at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks round out the regular season on Friday when it hosts Bentley University at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks will also host a Northeast-10 Tournament first round clash next Tuesday, October 21. Southern N.H. (11-1, 11-1 NE-10) awaits its NE-10 Tournament semifinal opponent that it will host on Friday, October 24.
