Adelphi Defeats Stonehill, 6-3

O'Donnell a double-winner to lead Skyhawks 

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (October 4, 2014) – Adelphi University, ranked eighth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, remained unbeaten in Conference play with a 6-3 decision over Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the region, in a key Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis match today.

Senior Charlotte Moreau (Lyon, France) and freshman Stefani Lineva (Middle Village, New York/Forest Hills) led four double-winners on the day for Adelphi. Moreau and junior Katrina Barborikova (Puchov, Slovakia) combined for an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles and then Moreau followed with a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles against Stonehill junior Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth). Barborikova was also among the double-winners for the Panthers with her 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 against freshman Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro).

Lineva and freshman Rebecca Fakas (Little Neck, New York/Benjamin N. Cardozo) teamed up to roll to an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles as Adelphi won two of three doubles matches on their way to the win. Lineva followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles against junior Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Michigan/Marian), while Fakas rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 10-4 triumph against senior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, Rhode Island/Mount Saint Charles Academy) at No. 5. It marks just Lawrence's sixth loss in NE-10 play against 35 wins.

Freshman Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) was a double-winner to lead Stonehill. She and Lawrence teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, before she rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles against junior Bianca Bernal (Locust Valley, New York/Locust Valley). Freshman Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, New York/Saddlebrook Prep) also earned a point for the Skyhawks with her 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 victory at No. 4 singles against senior Joanna Haich (Flushing, New York/Francis Lewis).

Stonehill (6-1, 6-1 NE-10) returns to the courts on Wednesday when it visits Saint Anselm College for an NE-10 match at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks next home match in next Saturday, October 11, against Merrimack College, ranked sixth in the region at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 11 a.m. Adelphi  (11-2, 9-0 NE-10) hosts Bentley University tomorrow at 10 a.m.
