Stonehill Shuts Out Saint Rose, 9-0

Paradiso and Barbetta lead Skyhawks double-winners 

EASTON, Mass. (September 14, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, closed out its first week of the season with three straight wins after posting a 9-0 decision over the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts today.

Junior Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Michigan/Marian) and freshman Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) led four double-winners for Stonehill. The Skyhawks swept the three doubles matches by identical 8-1 score lines with Paradiso and Barbetta winning at No. 1 doubles. Paradiso fought past Saint Rose junior Isabella Cubillos (Cali, Columbia) 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Barbetta rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 2 against junior Paige Southwick (Champlain, New York/Northeastern Clinton) for her first collegiate singles victory.

Senior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, Rhode Island/Mount Saint Charles Academy) and freshman Emma Prinos (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Foxboro) also collected singles and doubles wins on the afternoon for Stonehill. Lawrence combined with freshman Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles and then followed with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 4 singles against freshman KeriAnn Mahoney (Shelter Island, New York/Shelter Island). Prinos and junior Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) breezed to an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and then Prinos claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles against senior Megan Stacklum (Newburgh, New York/Our Lady of Lourdes).

Sophomore Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colorado/D'Evelyn) and freshman Corrie MacLean (Trumbull, Connecticut/Trumbull) both chipped in with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively for Stonehill. Smith rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 decision against freshman Alanna Bergmann (Granby, Connecticut/Granby Memorial), while MacLean made her collegiate debut and registered a 6-0, 6-1 win over junior Maria Malafronte (Middletown, Connecticut/Mercy).

Stonehill (3-0, 3-0 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday, when it visits Southern New Hampshire University, ranked tenth in the region, for a key NE-10 dual match at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Sunday, September 21, to host Saint Michael's College at noon. Saint Rose (1-4, 0-3 NE-10) hosts the University of New Haven on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
