Maloney Named Women’s Tennis Coach at Stonehill

Former Endicott assistant takes Skyhawk reigns after Arpe retirement

EASTON, Mass. (July 29, 2014) – Stonehill College has named Marc Maloney as head coach of its women's tennis program. The announcement was made today by Brendan J. Sullivan, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at the College.

"I am excited to welcome Marc Maloney to the Stonehill women's tennis program as their next head coach," said Sullivan. "In seeking a coach to help the student-athletes build upon the tremendous success enjoyed by this program over the past decade, I sought an individual that was committed providing a strong, competitive athletic experience while supporting the student-athlete's continued achievements in the classroom. Marc's passion for tennis, his success as both a coach and as a player, and his care for the student-athlete experience made him stand out as the strongest candidate in an impressive applicant pool. I look forward to watching Marc lead the women's tennis program to continued success on the court, in the classroom, and in our community."

Maloney takes over as head coach following the retirement of Pam Arpe, who led Stonehill to a 157-49 (.762) record over ten seasons with five Northeast-10 Conference championships and seven NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. Maloney joins the Skyhawks after three seasons as assistant coach of the men's and women's tennis programs at his alma mater, Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, under Jeremy Howard and Lauren MacKay. The women's tennis program posted a 50-14 (.781) record in his three seasons as assistant coach, winning three Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championships and earning three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. The Gulls were 21-3 (.875) in CCC play over those three years as well and posted a program-best 19-4 clip during the 2012-13 season.

"There are certainly big shoes to fill following someone like Coach Arpe, who has had such a track record of success," said Maloney. "I'm excited for the opportunity to work to continue the tradition of success that she has created with the Stonehill women's tennis program."

The men's tennis program posted a 30-28 (.517) overall record during Maloney's three seasons as assistant coach, including a 16-8 (.667) mark in CCC play, with three Conference tournament appearances. Maloney assisted with the organization of practice sessions, match preparation and coaching as well as recruiting. He has gained coaching experience as an instructor at Indian Ridge Country Club, in Andover, Agawam (Mass.) Parks & Recreation, Forest Park Recreation Department, in Springfield, and Ann Arbor School System, in Michigan.

Maloney is a 2009 graduate of Endicott, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, where he was a four year member of the men's tennis team, serving as captain for three years. He was the team's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative all four years and helped lead the Gulls to a combined 23-12 (.657) record over his junior and senior seasons and three CCC Tournament appearances.

The Stonehill women's tennis program, ranked ninth in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, capped the 2013-14 season with a 17-7 record overall, including 10-2 in Northeast-10 play. The Skyhawks placed five singles players on the All-Northeast-10 Conference teams and earned their NE-10 record matching 15th NE-10 Tournament appearance.

With 20 intercollegiate sports, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. The Skyhawks have finished in the top three of the final NE-10 Presidents' Cup standings ten straight years, including a second place finish in 2013-14, winning the Cup four times, including a streak of three-straight from 2009-10 through 2011-12. This prestigious award is given to the top performing athletic school in the Northeast-10, across all sports and seasons. Stonehill has received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first three years of the program's existence of honoring programs with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. The Skyhawks have earned a 97% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for fifth among all NCAA Division II institutions, with ten Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%. In addition, the Skyhawks are ranked sixth in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings used to assess the academic and athletic standards of all NCAA and NAIA athletic programs. Stonehill has also been the host site for the 2016 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium.
