NE-10 FIRST ROUND: #3 Stonehill Blanks #6 Bentley, 5-0

Kump and Martin steer Skyhawks into Friday's semifinal round 

EASTON, Mass. (April 23, 2014) – Third-seeded Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, picked up a quick 5-0 victory over sixth-seeded Bentley University in first round action of the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Women's Tennis Tournament at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.

Stonehill (17-6, 10-2 NE-10) advances NE-10 semifinal round where it will visit second-seeded Adelphi University (12-5, 11-1 NE-10), ranked eighth in the ITA regional rankings and seventh in the NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, on Friday at 2 p.m. The Panthers earned one of two first round byes along with regular season champions Merrimack College (13-4, 12-0 NE-10). The NE-10 Championship match is scheduled for Sunday, April 27, at the site of the highest remaining seed at 1 p.m. Bentley closes its season out with an 8-11 record overall, 7-5 in NE-10 play.

Senior Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) and sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) led Stonehill to the win with doubles and singles victories. Martin wrapped up the win for the Skyhawks with her 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles against Bentley junior Melanie Scott (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug). Martin also combined with sophomore Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) for an 8-1 decision at No. 1 doubles against sophomores Ludmila Yamus (Deer Park, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and Catherine Gianino (Burlington, Mass./Burlington).

Kump earned Stonehill's first singles point with her 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 over freshman Rachel Petrini (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand). She also teamed up with freshman Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Conn./D'Evelyn) for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles against Scott and sophomore Lexie Hinrichs (Franklin, Mass./Ursuline Academy) to complete the Skyhawks sweep of the three doubles matches.

Junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and sophomore Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) earned Stonehill's first point of the match with their 8-2 decision at No. 2 doubles against Petrini and sophomore Brittani Hetyei (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township). Matches at No. 1, 2, and 3 singles went unfinished once the Skyhawks clinched the victory, while No. 6 singles was just entering the court for warm-ups.
