Stonehill Rebounds Against Saint Michael’s, 9-0


Senior Kaitlyn Martin notched wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 5 singles on Senior Day. She has posted a career combined record of 131-42 in singles and doubles play.

Martin, Toegemann and Paradiso lead Skyhawks to Senior Day win

EASTON, Mass. (April 9, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, bounced back from a pair of weekend setbacks with a commanding 9-0 triumph over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action on Senior Day at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Senior Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) and sophomores Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) led the way for Stonehill with wins in singles and doubles play. Martin celebrated senior day with a pair of wins, teaming up with Paradiso for an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles as the Skyhawks swept doubles play to set the tone for the win. Martin also picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win over Saint Michael's sophomore Alexandra Sulkin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) at No. 5 singles. Paradiso also recorded a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 2 singles against freshman Nicole Kellogg (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake).

Toegemann, ranked 20th in the ITA East Regional singles rankings, combined with junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) for a 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles against Sulkin and sophomore Erica Bundrick (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck). Toegemann also breezed to a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles against Bundrick, while Lawrence clinched the Skyhawks deciding fifth point with her 6-0, 6-3 decision over junior Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate).

Sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and freshman Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colo./D'Evelyn) rounded out Stonehill double-winners on the afternoon. The duo combined for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles against Kellogg and junior Kayla Dowd (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow). Kump added a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 4 singles against junior Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School), while Smith posted a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles against junior Caroline Toutoungi (Weston, Conn./Weston).

Stonehill (16-5, 10-1 NE-10) closes out the regular season on Saturday with a big NE-10 clash at Merrimack College at noon. Saint Michael's (7-7, 5-3 NE-10) travels to the University of New Haven on Saturday at 11 a.m.
