Adelphi Rallies to Clip Stonehill, 5-4

Panthers win top four singles flights to erase 2-1 doubles deficit 

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 5, 2014) – Adelphi University won the top four singles flights to rally from a 2-1 deficit following doubles play to claim a big 5-4 victory over Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action this afternoon.

Junior Charlotte Moreau (Lyon, France) and sophomore Katharina Barborikov (Puchov, Slovakia) were both double-winners to lead Adelphi to the key regional win. The duo claimed the Panthers lone doubles win with an 8-1 victory at No. 1. Moreau followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Stonehill sophomore Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School), ranked 20th in the ITA East Regional singles rankings. Barborikov, ranked 13th in the ITA East singles rankings, picked up a 6-1, 6-4 decision over sophomore Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) at No. 2 singles.

Junior Joanna Haich (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) added a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles against Stonehill junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy), while senior Gaby Adia (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) clinched the win and capped the comeback by rallying from a 5-2 deficit in the third set to claim a 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 triumph over sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) at No. 4.

Freshman Lorraine Smith (Littleton, Colo./D'Evelyn) was a double-winner to lead Stonehill. She combined with Kump for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles before posting an 8-2 pro-set win at No. 6 singles against Adelphi freshman Jennifer Ferguson (Franklin Square, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy). Senior Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles against senior Taylor King (Roosevelt, N.Y./Baldwin). Toegemann and Lawrence teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles over King and Ferguson.

Stonehill (15-4, 9-1 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow for a non-conference matchup at New York Institute of Technology, ranked 11th in the ITA Division II national rankings and first in the region, at 10 a.m. The Skyhawks return home Wednesday when it hosts Saint Michael's College their Purple & White match on Senior Day at 3 p.m. Adelphi (8-5, 7-1 NE-10) visits Franklin Pierce University on Friday at 10 a.m.
