Plevako leads double-winners for Knights
EASTON, Mass. (March 30, 2014) – Queens (N.Y.) College, ranked No. 32 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II rankings and second in the ITA East Regional rankings, claimed a 9-0 victory over Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the East Region, in non-conference women's tennis action in the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.
Junior Jenna Plevako (Astana, Kazakhstan), the 37th-ranked singles player in Division II by the ITA, led the double-winners for Queens on the afternoon. She teamed up with classmate Jennifer Fridman (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and then posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles against Stonehill sophomore Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian). Fridman added a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 against senior Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway).
Freshman Aylin Mehter (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), ranked sixth in the East Region singles rankings, and sophomore Andrea Samson (Key Biscayne, Fla./La Salle), ranked 16th, combined for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles for Queens. Mehter added a 6-4, 6-1 win over junior Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) at No. 2 singles, while Samson defeated sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3.
Junior Olivia Schneider (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) hung tough for Stonehill in the first set against sophomore Darby Brandon (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock) at No. 6 singles, dropping the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-1), before dropping the second set 6-0.
Stonehill (14-3, 8-0 NE-10) returns to action on Thursday when it visits Southern New Hampshire University, ranked eighth in the East Region, for a huge Northeast-10 Conference match at 3 p.m. Queens (15-2, 7-1 ECC) visits Goldey-Beacom University on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
