Stonehill Rolls Past Assumption, 8-1

EASTON, Mass. (March 20, 2014) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings released on Wednesday, opened its spring home schedule and returned to Conference play with an 8-1 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Sophomore Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) led five double-winners for the Skyhawks as she picked up wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. She and classmate Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School), the ninth-ranked doubles team in the East Region by the latest ITA rankings released yesterday, posted an 8-4 win as Stonehill swept the three doubles matches to send the Skyhawks on their way to victory. Paradiso breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Assumption senior Paige Gilet (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford).

Senior captain Kaitlyn Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Medway) and sophomore Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), the NE-10 Player of the Week, combined for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles for Stonehill. Kump added a 6-0, 6-1 win over sophomore Cassy Waung (Bolton, Mass./East Catholic) at No. 4 singles, while Martin rolled to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 against senior Meg Hall (Pembroke, Mass./Notre Dame).

Juniors Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and Olivia Schneider (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) rounded out Stonehill's double-winners as they teamed up for an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles before adding singles wins. Lawrence claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over freshman Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy), while Schneider added a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 6 over Paige Palmero (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall).

Freshman Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) notched the lone point for Assumption when Toegemann, the 20th-ranked singles player in the East Region by the ITA, retired after dropping the opening set, 6-1.

Stonehill (12-2, 6-0 NE-10) is back in action on Sunday when it competes at the Wheaton College Invitational in Norton starting at 9 a.m. The Skyhawks return home to host Bentley University for a key NE-10 match next Tuesday, March 25, at 3 p.m. Assumption 2-8, 1-3 NE-10) hosts Bentley on Monday at 3 p.m.
